Question about the Light in Genesis chapter 1?
We see in the beginning, one of the first things that God, Elohim said, was ' let there be light" and there was light.
3 And God said, Let there be light; and there was light.
4 And God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
In our experience light comes from the sun, yet, these light bearers were not created by God until the 4th day
14 And God said, Let there be light-bearers in the expanse of heaven to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years;
15 And let them be light-bearers in the expanse of heaven to give light on the earth; and it was so.
16 And God made the two great light-bearers, the greater light-bearer to rule the day and the lesser light-bearer to rule the night, and the stars.
17 And God set them in the expanse of heaven to give light on the earth
18 And to rule over the day and over the night and to separate the light from the darkness, and God saw that it was good.
19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day..
So where did this first day light come from?
Thank you for posting today
yay! they have arrived :)
Tinman did you understand what I am asking here? Please read it again. I am asking about the difference between the first day's light and the fourth day's light.

what he is so kind to reveal to us is that He first created darkness and then called light out of darkness on this earth.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace and create evil; I the Lord do all these things.
2 Corinthians 4:6 For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood an holy nation a peculiar people that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness.
For all who have been given eyes to see and ears to hear the word earth is actually a revelation of how God is working with mankind who is out of the ground dust.
Jeremiah 22:29 O earth, earth, earth, here the word of God.
So the wording of Genesis does not deny that God Himself is light himself. He actually tells us that he created light.
Genesis 1:3 and God said let there be light and there was light.
At this time I would like to add that God is light and there there is no darkness in him 1 John 1:5. here is a link to the above that I found. Thanks for the question friend. God bless.

The ancient Hebrews did not consider the light of the daytime sky to be caused by the sun. After all, the sky gets light before the sun appears in the morning and stays light for a while after the sun sets. They, of course, did not know about the atmospheric refraction of the light from the sun when it is just below the horizon, so it would have natural for them to think that the light of the daytime sky was separate from the sun's light.
That observation would have resulted in their conclusion about the order of creation events. Since, just before the appearance of the sun at dawn, the sky becomes light, and then the sun appears. To the scientifically naive, this would mean that the light of the sky was created first and then the sun.
In other words, they considered that there were two separate sources of light. During the first three days, the light of the daytime sky was the only source of light, and then after the sun was created on the fourth day, it was an additional source of light.
The light of day (meaning that of the daytime sky) HAD to have been considered separate from the light of the sun since the sun was not created until the third day.
That understanding is supported by Eccl: 12:2,
"before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain,"
The Hebrew word for light there is 'owr, which is the same word used in Genesis for light. So that passage is indicating that there are two sources of light during the day: the sun and the light of the daytime sky. If the ancient Hebrews thought the light of the daytime sky was caused by the sun, they would not have needed to add that light to the passage, for the darkening of the sun would also cause the darkening of the light of the sky.
Ps 74:16 also indicates the same thing:
"The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun."
Meaning he prepared the light of the daytime sky and the sun. There the Hebrew word for light is ma'owr, which is a variation of 'owr.
All of which goes to show that the Bible is based on ancient Hebrew ignorance, myth, and superstition, and is not worthy of being believed in as a supernatural revelation.

From my own perspective (which could be wrong, of course), God simply caused light to exist. We assume that light must come from an object, but that would not necessarily be the case. Perhaps God caused light to shine until such time as the sun and stars were created, and then He limited all light as emanating solely from these orbs.
Or it may be that light from heaven was allowed to shine into our universe until such time as He created the sun and stars.
Or, for those who believe in the big bang theory (which I do not), the initial explosion (i.e. a sudden expansion of matter and energy from a central point) would have produced light prior to the stars and sun ever forming. (I do not buy this, but this is for those who DO believe in the concept of a "big bang".)
Well, at least that's MY take on things.

Each day is an era that changes were caused to happen on the earth. The point of view would be as if the observer was on the surface of the earth. Scientists speak of the primordial earth as a place dark from the heavy gases in the atmosphere blocking light from penetrating to the surface. When these gases began to thin out, it allowed for the light in a diffused manner to be seen at the surface, and the observer would have noticed the cycle of light and darkness as the earth rotated.
Science also believe that as the heavy gas elements combined that the sky would have cleared, thus allowing the objects that caused the light, the sun, and moon to be visible. But that was over an expanse of millions of years. Please reference the link below for more information about the creation and what made each "day" distinct.

Yes i agree with Camille , the Holy Spirit is that Light , as Jesus was also "The Light " .
I find it also intetesting that in science ,they have found that the atoms and all particles are also held together by Light . So in the beginning God , to perform His magnificent creation , everything is dependent on Light to exist . God is Light , and put it into effect , the sun is source of light , but God is the enduring - everlasting Light .
In heaven as described in Revelation , we no longer will be reliant on the suns light , we are illuminated by Gods glory , a Glorious Light .

The *source* of earth's light was created on one day.
However, that was before it could be seen from the earth.
When earth's atmosphere cleared, its light could finally be seen from earth's surface. Thus, light 'came to be' upon the surface of the earth for the first time.
This is a chart that shows the order of things during Creation:

Day No. Creative Works Texts
1 Light; division between day & night . . . Ge 1:3-5
2 Expanse, a division between waters beneath
the expanse & waters above it . . . Ge 1:6-8

Why would God not be able to bring light into being. I don't get what it is you don't get.
I was just reading Genesis earlier today, I read it regularly, one of my fave Bible books. I think the ancients were not stupid, were not mindless. They saw that and were puzzled as you and I might be -- but figured that the God that made the universe could do that. At any rate something is being said there with meaning. It would be easy to have said something less puzzling. The ancients were not stupid.

The Gospel of John:1:1 - 1:14
When we think about God the creator we must think of Him as a God of people. There is a light we can not see with the naked eye. One type are X-Rays, Ultraviolet, Infrared, etc. The Father Spirit is light beyond physical light. He is the Word or creative thought which is alive. A thought is actually light. The electrical impulses that travel to and fro from neuron to neuron carry information via thoughts within our Soul. God is the masculine spirit (Father of spirits). We are His offspring. If so, being that we came out from Him, we shall also return unto Him. We are the feminine aspect as receivers to propagate and spread the seed of His Word. In this sense we seem to become masculine, but only as having the Spirit to impart life in the process of thought conceptualizing. Therefore, the throne of the most high is within His people where He is always vigilant in preparing the way for us, His offspring, His children, His love.
"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine."
Jesus Christ is the Door to the light of understanding.

Light is physical or we couldn't see it. However, it has to be created BEFORE it can come from anything. If light doesn't exist prior to the sun and moon and stars then there is no light at all. The sun and stars burn and produce what we call light. Without light, all you have is possibly heat in darkness.

I saw a documentary on Television one evening, it was about Science and the stars, space, etc.
Science says that during the first few thousand years or so, there was chaos all around. Many things zooming around, crashing into each other, and burning up.
And science says, that had Earth been here and a person or persons on it, they would have seen the Universe all lit up, because of the amazing fire works display.
Yes, there WAS light.
