If the Lord Jesus was not God in the flesh, why was He worshiped by the Magi?

So we see that the Magi in Matthew 2 :11

And they came into the house and saw the child with Mary His mother. And falling down, they worshiped Him; and opening their treasures, they offered gifts to Him, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

If this son given to us was not God the Son, and worthy or worship, why did the Father allow these Magi to fall down and worship the child Jesus.

Further thoughts.

If any, what do the gold, frankincense and myrrh signify.

Seeing the workings of God unfold in Scriptures gladdens our hearts. In mystery I have wondered more concerning this passage of scripture. As I studied this questions began to form in me. Why these Magi harkened to the call of the Star of Bethlehem, also how willing they were to travel to be near to God?! The wise ones follow the star, as seekers of Wisdom, wanting to know of the Divine. History reveals they studied at all manner of phenomenon. Searching their collection of books, speaking to the scribes of the different religions, and in this found, that Israel was the place where the prophecies stated a King of Kings was to be born, the Messiah. In wisdom these ones knew that God’s Kingdom was being ushered in. What most of us either don’t know, or remember was that Babylon had remained a center of Jewish studies so they did have access to this knowledge. And God saw fit to include these ones to know God, ignited and flamed them to be diligent, to seek, to go see this child the Messiah to pay homage to him. In this I see God’s plan for salvation unfolding to the nations. In the handling of King Herod the Great’s suspicions and interrogations they responded with ease of discernment. These were a special group of men who saw Jesus as a child, in the flesh. The Scriptures say they presented Jesus Christ with three gifts, yet we know not with certainty how many of these men there were ~ there could have been many. (Furthermore, as three gifts were given it is wrongly thought this meant only three men, not so)> Astronomy, the prophetic wisdom, the yearning to know more of this KIng of Kings. Their appearance proves God intended the world to be saved, long ago.(John3:16). Imagine, how many years God had watched over them, leading them, inspiring them to search more! Through their studies, inspiration for God grew, looking for Him, and in Faith they came expecting to find him… now that is inspiring! WOW! Also, every barrier, was dealt with, such as Herod. They travelled far, yet even the Pharisees knew of the scriptures, they did not go the four miles to see this child. In all of their story and Herod’s a certain modeling happens, we see deeper things. These men left their places of comfort to be near God, upon seeing Jesus they worshipped Him… ((Ty >Gabby for verses))! With gifts they came!

    The gifts proclaim the future:

Each gift gathers us to special meanings, as we understand more, we see how far God’s love continues to reach to us, as each one foretells the Story of Jesus Christ’s life. In the Book of Isaiah > when describing Jerusalem’s glorious restoration, we are told of nations and kings who come with gold and frankincense and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. (Isa 60:6). Please read the full commentary, it is short, Wows me!

http://www.christnotes.org/commentary.php?com=mhc&... Now this is more than speculation, this is Truth… that these men were invited by God, to take home the message of the Messiah… come in the flesh. These gifts are for us, to cherish within, for the people of His Kingdom, to pronounce to the entire world of His Coming and Going. The Gold represents His Kingship; Frankincense is a symbol of His Priestly Role, and Myrrh is a prefiguring of His Death and Embalming. So these gifts give us the images of His future life, surely not accidental in the choosing. They are a testament if you will of all that he would do, Frankincense represents His Divinity; burned as a pleasant offering to God our Father; myrrh represents bitterness (john 19: 39)… which acknowledges the human suffering that Jesus endured. Even though these gifts provided financial and medicinal resources to Joseph and Mary in the physical realms, for us in the Faith, we see the spiritual reasons… and the Merciful Bounty of God… as these provide us with the vision that God has planned and made provision, loving us… as He planned for Salvation to come to the ends of the world all along. Each gifted foreshadowed the Story of Jesus’ life and death on earth (see Matt 1:22-23), and our Salvation. The Seal of His Sufferings… the wounded ness of our Jesus was so we could be reconciled to all that God our Father yearns for us to have, Jesus came to take us home. There is so much more to see… everyone… foreshadowing all that is found in Christ.

If you are not satisfied with something, you can not have a memorial of it, these wise men were satisfied in seeking and following the star they came in Faith, and so was God satisfied, and in this me too… So much is contained in the Old Testament, we need to use both so we come to appreciate how Great our God is. God bless everyone…Jesus Christ is our Sweet Fragrance of Rest! i loved perceiving more, from Isaiah...(cont'd below)

Quelle(n): seeing the Wise Men portrayed with more depth... who surely are part of his temple. those who hunger and thirst after Righteousness... receiving! Emmanuel, Jesus Christ is Emmanuel, as God in our midst. All of these humans *shephards, wise men, model for us the way to respond to The Glory of God, as Believers. Herod as an unbeliever. See (Isaiah 53:1-12: Phil 2:10-11; In Jeremiah 23:5> “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.” ) Also: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty (Rev: 1:8). Exactly. God declares He will share worship with NO ONE. So, why, whenever Jesus was 'worshiped', did not God immediately destroy Him instead of declaring Jesus as His perfect Son? Jesus never once told any of the people who did bow down and worship Him to stop. Not once. The angel in Revelation refused John's attempt to bow down to it. Jesus accepted it as was His right.

Maybe because Jesus is... God in the flesh, just as Matthew 1:27 states? You think? Boggles the mind how people claim to accept the bible, but refuse to accept the bits they don't understand. Mostly because they are being taught they are "wrong". Guess that stumbling stone is still out there, eh?

    This isn't rocket science.

Hi, good question and it would seem to stand that since the magi was able to find out about the Christ being born in bethlehem through their writings (by what they more than likely received from the jewish people;daniel perhaps)could these same writings about the King(of kings) who would be born be still in their possession? And the gold would presume stands for his divnity and the frankensense maybe his preist hood ,the myrrh,i believe, is for medical purposes and would perhaps be reminesinct of his being wounded or pehaps speaks about his death.

Not to mention all of these other people! You make a great point!

Mat 8:2 And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him

Mat 9:18 ...behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him

Mat 14:33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him...

Mat 15:25 Then she came and worshiped Him

Mat 28:17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him...

Mark 5:6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him.

Luke 24:52 And they (those who witnessed the ascension) worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

John 9:38 Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshiped Him.

Excellent point & a thanks to Gabby too -

There is a correct answer - idk it quite yet

Frankincense and myrrh were to be sprinkled upon the offerings and sacrifices -

Why were the wise men considered wise? Because they knew when Christ was coming! [And the timing was perfect from the 1st day] They were well versed in Scripture but did not use Genesis but the little book open.

in every literal word of the bible, Jesus says he is the son of God. not the same persons, however jesus did appear in the resurrected body of flesh and bone. so, he was born like unto a mortal with all infirmities and was resurrected in the glorifed exalted body of flesh and bone.

    1 Jn. 5: 5, 9-13, 20

5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

when it comes to the Magi that came unto jesus, i believe but have no proof, that they knew the prophecies of jesus, and the forefathers of Jesus had transactions and trade with these men. therefore they knew he was of God and it is acceptible by God the Father that His Son(s) should be exalted and glorified. knowing that his sons do exalt Him and glorify him abidingly.

@shana it does specifically say these men worshiped jesus...

11 ¶ And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and afrankincense, and myrrh.

He was not. Two Greek words in the new testament are translated as ''worship'': Proskuneo and latreuo. The former is best translated as ''did homage'' because it is also used for actions done to angels, kings and men of authority. It Describes a custom of bowing to the ground before a figure of authority. This is the word used for the shepherds. The other word, latreuo, is used exclusively for sacred service to God the father, the only true God, and is rightly rendered as ''worship''.

Please see this explanation of citations on proskuneo...

You need to go further back. The real question is why do you believe a holy book you never researched. The entire New Testament was put together based on a voted on set of beliefs and including only those books that agreed with the approved doctrines. All the other books used as scripture for over 300 years were suppressed and mostly destroyed.

How do you know that Jesus was worshiped by the Magi?

    Let me guess.

    You read a story

written by someone who was not there.

Have you read the Harry Potter series?

It has parts about people flying around on brooms.

If Harry Potter can't really fly on a broom, then how could he have POSSIBLY caught the snitch in the quidditch match?!?
