Has any heard about the new NYC mayor's plan to ban horse carriages?

Apparently the new mayor thinks the horses will live happier lives if they are not allowed to work. He must be in thrall to aminal rghits people. Does anyone have further info, or at least opinions?

Update:

Electric vehicles. Go to NYC to ride the electric vehicles. Wait a minute, there's 842 miles of track in NYC expressly (and locally) for that purpose.

"Johnny, there's no such thing as horses any more. That's only in story books. I think there used to be horses in Central Park, but there aren't any now. Let's take the subway to where we can ride the electric car."

Next will the mayor close the Cloisters? "Sorry, Sally, there used to be unicorns at a place called the Cloisters, but it's closed now. The unicorns were just mythical, anyway, like the horses."

I'm glad I live out in the country where lots of people have horses, and a few, so I've heard, still farm with mules.

    I think it's ridiculous.

He's going to put an industry out of business. What are the drivers, grooms, stables, and so on going to do for a new job?

What does he think is going to happen to those horses if they can no longer be used? Hint: they're not going to be retiring to happy land in upstate NY!

This is a perfectly legal business. If some horses are being abused, that's already against the law, and the abusers should be prosecuted and stopped. You don't punish everyone for the actions of a few . LOL! If we did, there'd be no politicians to propose such idiocy!

This PETA inspired idiocy is spawned of pure ignorance mated with jealousy.

I'm with Zephania on this one. Asinine. The sad thing is, very few of the people advocating for the ban on carriage horses have ever handled a horse, or know nothing about them. When they run around screaming the horse has tumors on its legs (chestnuts), or that the horses are injured (resting a hind leg), or that fly bonnets are the Devil's creation... I just can't take them seriously.

Those horses are in good flesh, shiny, and happy. Their stables are well kept and large enough to lay down in (and if you haven't been in there to see them for yourself, shush!)

Are all carriage drivers honest? Nope. There was an incident recently with a driver who should be strung out, but the majority are hard-working people who rely on their horses for income. What the mayor is proposing will put so many people out of work. Where do the RARAs think the horses will go after? Either the owners will pay to have them boarded for retirement, or sell them. People are assuming they'll just give the horses away to rescues - and claim they have rescues lined up to take them - but no one in their right mind is going to GIVE AWAY a $4,000+ horse. Those horses are very desirable. And, as soon as the ban comes to fruition, if they did seize the horses and give them to rescues, how many rescues are going to suddenly back out? These are draft horses... 200 of them!

The whole thing is just... stupid, for lack of a better word.

You can head on over to the COTH Off Topic forums to keep UTD on what's going on. Eva (the vice president of the NYC carriage assoc.) is a member, though she's got more important things going on right now than posting there, and I don't think she's been around. But, there are some threads going about it.

ETA: Off Course forum, not Off Topic (though, there is one there, too)

Opinion, he is absolutely RIGHT. These animals are terribly abused in many cases.
