how can I persuade my mum to let me buy a DSLR?

Okay so I have a compact camera atm its pretty **** with like 8 mp. But my mum doesn't realise that that to a dslr is a massive step, I want a nikon d3200 which has 3 times as much mexa pixels as my camera now. And a lot better video quality. Should I just rack all these specs and tell her all of them?

I don't think that your present experience and knowledge base justifies moving onto as DSLR yet. I'm sorry if that soiunds harsh, but you still have some learning to do. Why do you feel that you need "more megapixels"? It's not just about megapixels. I've taken great quality images on a 6 megapixel DSLR (an old Pentax K110D with a fast manual focus 50mm lens). The quality was good because of the lens, my understanding of exposure, and to a point because of the APS-C sensor size. Still, it is a 6 megapixel camera.

Why should your mother fork out so much money on a brand new DSLR? Where does her money come from? If she works for it - it's her money, not yours. Expecting to be spoiled with gifts isn't a good start to Life. Maybe you could keep an eye out for a cheaper, used DSLR, or a bridge camera, and offer to help pay for it with chores?

I take it you have to convince your mum because she's paying for it? DSLRs are alot of money and she might not be able to afford it. I'm guessing from the way you write and the fact that you're depending on your mum to buy you this sort of stuff that you are in school. There is no way you need a digitalSLR while you are at school. I know people who did A Levels in photography without them! I went through art school without one (granted I did painting not photography but still.)

Why don't you try getting a manual SLR (film camera). You can get them quite cheaply on ebay and then you can play around with it and see if that type of camera is for your before you guilt your mum into dropping £500+ she might not have.

and p.s, megapixels has nothing to do with image quality, its the lens that counts.

8 mega pixels is still good. Don't be fooled by more MPs it wont turn you into a better photographer.

Wait and save your money then chose the best DSLR you can afford. Don't just buy one for the sake of it.

A good photographer can produce good images from any camera. 8 MP is more then enough for most people, assuming you're not going to make gigantic prints. If you want the camera so much then save up your own money and purchase it.

Megapixels are a gimmick used by camera manufacturers to get gullible people to buy new cameras.

I agree that the DSLR will certainly have better video, but more megapixels do not magically give you better photos. A bad photo is, in the great majority of cases, due to a bad photographer. More megapixels just give you a LARGER bad photo.

If you were to get a DSLR, your pictures would look the same as on your compact camera unless you take pictures at night, dusk or dawn at high ISOs.

Why do you need to get your mom to let you buy a camera? If you have the money, and you want it, then buy it.

Why do you need to persuade her?

If you have the money, just go buy one. You don't need her permission.
