What happens after reseting a router?

I been losing ineternet connection for a week now and did the unplug and plug back in of the router and modom and that dont help most times. Cable guy said im getting good signal.

Today a message started popping up saying something like "IP adress conflict with another system on network" and i looked it up and one thing I read was something about the router. I was going to push the putton with a pen and hold it for 30 secs to reset it to see if it fixes my problem but after I do that then what? Do I need codes and stuff?

Ok your router uses a protocol called DHCP to give your computers ip addresses. Each IP address must be different. So what happens is it gives out an IP and records the hardware address of the device it gives that to. This way it doesn't give the same IP to 2 different devices. It will maintain this database as long as it has power. Your computer will check in with it periodically and make sure it can still have that IP. Usually every 8 hours.

Now what if you power off that router. It will lose the DB and forget who it has given IP's to. Now a device or computer could get an IP that another computer has because the router forgot it already gave that out. That is what is causing your conflict.

To fix that, reboot ALL network devices in your house EVERY TIME you reboot your router. This forces them to all check in right away and update the routers database.

Unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds or more then plug in the modem then the router. This was what Comcast told me to do. They advised me to do this at least once a month and have not had anymore problems since then. Good luck.
