Allowed to leave train station whilst waiting?

Hello,

I am travelling from Bradford-on-Avon to Stanstead airport.

I change trains at Bath Spa.

From Bath Spa I then catch a train to London.

My question is this:

am I allowed to leave the Bath Spa train station whilst waiting for the train to London,

and walk around in Bath for a while and then come back

or do I have to remain on the train station until my train comes.

I paid for these tickets in advance and collected them from the ticket machine yesterday.

Thank you

P.S. To get in and out of the Bath Spa train station you have to feed your ticket through the barrier, so I can't just leave

If you have an Advance ticket, which can only be used on a specific train, you will not be able to do that - it counts as breaking your journey, which is not allowed with those tickets.

Note that a ticket bought in advance is not necessarily an Advance ticket - if you have a Off Peak or an Anytime ticket you can break your journey when and where you like.

As your ticket is for an onward journey you will get it back when you feed it through the barrier at Bath Spa. You shouldn't need to do this again when you return after your walk round. Remember to check what time your next train is and allow plenty of time to get back to the station! When you feed your ticket into the barrier at Stansted it will keep it as this is the end of your journey.

It depends if the ticket you have bought is labelled as an "Advance" ticket or not.

If it is, you cannot "break" your journey.

If it is not an "Advance" ticket, you can break your journey at any point, even when you would not otherwise have to change trains.

An "Advance" ticket is one that is for a specific time of train, not just any train on that date, or any Off-Peak train on that date.

See the second bullet-point on page 4 and Section 16 on pages 11 & 12 of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage, at the link below.

Yes but ensure you use the manned side barrier and explain to the staff why you wish to retain your ticket. Use this barrier also when re-entering the platforms. If your ticket is inscribed with the words 'Advance Purchase' you must return to the station in time to catch the actual train you have booked for. Other types of tickets have more flexability

You should be OK but check with local station staff before you leave the station.
