was the Holy spirit present during the times of jesus christ?

the Holy Spirit was present both before and during the life of Jesus. (For examples of the "Holy Spirit" before Jesus "went away" see the following bible verses:

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.Luke 1:35

10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.1 Samuel 10:10,

15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.Luke 1:15

41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:Luke 1:41

This is not a history question.

    Try "Myths and Folklore."

Well, St. Paul sure believed the Holy Spirit was present. He attributed his conversion on the Damascus Road to the direct intervention of the Holy Spirit and he refused to defer to the 12 Apostles who had known Jesus during Jesus's lifetime. St. Paul never met Jesus but he argued the Holy Spirit made him equal to those who had. Today Christianity exists because of the missionary work of St. Paul. The original 12 when they sought converts demanded that the Jewish law be followed and male converts be circumcised before they could be baptized. That was a hard sell in days before anesthesia and even sharp steel knives. St. Paul (who was trained as a Pharisee) pointed out Abraham was certainly Jewish but the law did not exist at the time of Abraham so therefore circumcision was not necessary to become a Christian. A brilliant pice of logic which led to the founding of many Christian churches.

Today skeptics question whether or not St. Paul was really visited by the Holy Spirit. Some suggest he had a hallucination caused perhaps by striking his head on a stone when he was thrown from his chariot. But no one disputes that St. Paul believed in the Holy Spirit.
