First, NICS is not shutdown...so stop rumor mongering.
Second, don't blame the liberals. After 2.5 years and a presidential election, the GOP has failed to stop Obamacare, so instead they just hold the country hostage. I know a lot of conservatives don't see it that way, but that is the way it is being perceived by the general public. In the long term this is a real shame, because it makes the party the best protects are 2nd amendment rights weak and ineffective and has a high chance of backfiring on them as it did in the 90s.

Lana has it right. Here in Florida, there is a provision in State Law for when the Instant Background Check system is down:
790.065 (3) In the event of scheduled computer downtime, electronic failure, or similar emergency beyond the control of the Department of Law Enforcement, the department shall immediately notify the licensee of the reason for, and estimated length of, such delay. After such notification, the department shall forthwith, and in no event later than the end of the next business day of the licensee, either inform the requesting licensee if its records demonstrate that the buyer or transferee is prohibited from receipt or possession of a firearm pursuant to Florida and Federal law or provide the licensee with a unique approval number. Unless notified by the end of said next business day that the buyer or transferee is so prohibited, and without regard to whether she or he has received a unique approval number, the licensee may complete the sale or transfer and shall not be deemed in violation of this section with respect to such sale or transfer.
Also, Federal Law has a provision that says if not prohibited, you may after x number of days, transfer the firearm (and they say that when you call NICS for the check -- go ahead, ask me how I know.).
So, sneaky liberals or not, guns will still be sold.

When I tried to buy a 1911 in Virginia, the background check took too long due to the fact that my last name is Smith and it was in the most populous city in the state. The dealer hung up the phone, called the FBI and I had my handgun within 15 min. Note, the FBI is not furloughed.

If I wanted to go out and buy a military surplus rifle today or any other day the government is shut down, it would not affect me a bit. I have a C&R FFL which mean is I see a gun I want in a store today, I can just walk in, hand them a copy of my C&R license, purchase the gun, and walk right back out again :)

NICS checks are performed by civilian contract employees, whose contract is already paid. They will keep working, as though nothing happened.
The birds will still be able to sing as well. The sun will still shine. The wind will still blow.
