Why do i keep being referred to as british?

I too have this problem.

I correct them and say I am English. If they insist I ask them to show me a country called "Britain" on a map of the world. If Scotland and Wales are independent I don't see why we cannot be.

On forms which list Britain or the UK but not England I put other.

Because you are. England is in Great Britain, therefore English people like yourself are British, as are Scottish and Welsh people.

The name of the island made up of Scotland, Wales and England is Britain/Prydain. The name "England" is derived from the North Germanic immigrants who invaded in the 5th century AD - the area they settled in was known originally as Angle-land, which became shortened to England.

Though actually in Gaelic [an indigenous British language, as is Welsh] we call it Sasainn [the land of the Saxons, another invading tribe]

All English are British, but not all British are English.
