How long to program a key?

I just bought a 2013 Dodge Grand caravan but it only had one key. They ordered another one for me but told me I would have to drop the car off cause it will take at least 2 hours to do. Really 2 hrs to program a key? Does that sound right?

First, you may be able to program it yourself. Google it. I was able to on an older Mazda of mine.

Next, you have to realize you're not the only customer they have. When it comes to a dealership, there are no "appointments." Though they might say there is, but they take each and every car that walks in their door each and every time. They will NEVER turn someone away because "they're too busy right now."

Though the actual job may only take 10 minutes, they have to fill out the same work order forms, assign it to a technician who has to finish what he's doing, pull your car around, do the check-in procedure (look for body damage, inop items, etc), probably look up scheduled maintenance, call and try to sell you the "50,000 mile tuneup package with fuel system treatment," finally perform the real job it was there for, then send the car over to the wash rack to be washed before it comes back out to the service manager, who finishes what he's doing before calling you. This is how the business works. It may be a small job, but these steps still need to be completed. With that said, them forcing you to drop it off is pretty steep. I'd just tell them you're waiting and not to wash the car if you want the quickest turnaround time. But just have a little patience.

I had one replaced and reprogrammed on a 2008 Grand Caravan and it took about 25 minutes to do. I don't think it would take more then half and hour they might tell you two hours in case they are busy.

Most keys can take 10 minutes to a half hour to program. However, it is possible that it takes longer on that vehicle, I really don't know for sure.

I have worked in the automotive service business, and Al Bundy is 1000% correct.
