Why don't movie studios re-release movies back into theaters?s?

Wondering why you don't really see re-releases all that often. I caught Alien ( the directors cut) back in 2005 and was excited and happy to have done so (I missed its initial release because I wasnt born yet). I would certainly pay to see more than a few re-releases - Jaws, raiders of the lost ark to name 2. I get the argument that big screen surround sound setups are widely available and that you can get the stuff on netflix, but I can't be the only one that would enjoy seeing these flicks in the theater. I also get the argument that it would cost the studio a lot to promote it - but what about letting a theater do its own promo, maybe have it generally known that they run old blockbusters on one of their screens a few times a week? Or letting them piggy back off of an anticipated sequel/prequel - I'm sure someone would have gone to see the first two Batman movies if they were playing when DKR came out, or LOTR when the Hobbit was released. What re-releasing during the January/February horrible movie season?

It's up to the theater if they want to show less current movies or not. For a lot of them, there isn't enough money to be made to justify the cost when there could be a more profitable new blockbuster in the same slot.

There's a theater near my house that does an older movie every weekend. Recently I've seen at those showings Alien, Willow, Top Gun, Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, and Masters Of The Universe.

So they're out there, but it just isn't terribly common in a lot of places.

Frankly, I agree with you - although there are some movies that have been re-released. There are some brilliant films that I think should come back. I for one would like to see The Wizard of Oz on a big screen, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Hitchcock films, Jaws, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Star Wars, The Godfather, Pulp Fiction even is coming up on its 20th anniversary.

Great classic films too I would love to see them big-screen - there are a lot of us who've never seen them on big screen. Wish the film industry heard us.

because after a movie has circulated ONCE. they make much more cash off of the dvds
