Can you install airbags in an old car that doesn't have them?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question! I don't know much about cars. Just wondering if it's possible to put airbags in an older (like 60's-era) car. Thanks!

No as the airbag uses multiple telematrics before it will fire and older cars neither the sensors or loom that would cope with it all.

This might be a good product for some one to develop. With retro cars being built from the ground up, it could provide a nice income. The sensors and loom are no big problem, but getting it to look period correct would takes some time. But padded dashes have been around a long time and steering columns can be substituted- so it should be possible to develop this for the market.

Hopefully some one in the classic car industry takes note and considers pursuing such a product. It would qualify the cars for insurance discounts and in a way the purchaser would be able to recover the investment in a few years of ownership.

Not realistically, the dashboards were not designed for them, finding a bag that would fit would be difficult, the sensors and wiring would cost more than the car is worth.

The 60s were a whole different era, a large percentage of people thought that seatbelts would kill them, they were SAFER being thrown away from the wreckage. Many steering wheels had pointed horn buttons. A safe bumper was impenetrable, it just bashed everything away from you.

Instead of this idea, have you considered leaving a bigger gap and slowing down a little bit? I reckon the biggest aid to vehicle safety would be sharp internal edges everywhere, and a rusty 6 inch spike just above the driver's head. That might focus the driver's attention and reduce accidents. Hang on, just like my 43 year old Land Rover. (Without the rusty spike of course)

it can be done, anything is possible with cars, but would it be legal, the logistics of such a transformation would be a customisation job which could affect your M.O.T.cars with airbags have been tested by experts, surely airbags put in an old car wouldn't conform to or meet modern safety standards.

I don't think any one makes one. I would suggest installing a shoulder seat belt system. A shoulder belt system is a better system against injuries than airbags.

It would probably be cheaper to sell the old car and buy a more up to date one that already has air bags fitted.

Yes, it is technically possible. However, much redesign would be required. This would require painstaking labor and a ton of cash. Simply not a practical undertaking.

Yes you can, finding someone who can do it is the only semi difficult problem. But its been done before.
