How can I become an actress in the USA?
Hey guys,
I have a very serious question and appreciate honest answers.
Let's see. Where should I get started? Well, I am just going to tell you who I am, where I am from, what I am doing, my dreams and childish hopes....
I am a twenty year old girl/woman from a city called Cologne in Germany. Currently, I am starting an apprenticeship as a Clerk for Insurance and Finance (pretty boring, right?).
By dream is to become an actress. I don't know how to explain this desire, it just hit me in the last few months. The thing is..... I have never been to acting classes nor have I acted in any shows or plays at all. But I want to! So badly! I swear that I am very talented, I act in front of people and practice a lot at home. All I want to know is if there is a realistic chance for me to be an actress in the USA? Can I attend an acting school for example in New York without any preferences?
I work hard for what I want and I am very independent and confident. I went to a boarding school and was a foreign exchange student in West Virginia in 11th grade. I am sure I can handle the pressure and stressful life of an actress. My wish is to know how and if I can get started with my dream?
Thank you for your honesty
Love Alina

A serious and honest answer - you have no acting training and have never acted in any show at all. How can you possibly know you want to be an actor? You may like the IDEA of being an actor in the US, but the reality of an acting career is very different than what most people think. Pretending in front of people and at home is not really acting. Acting involves breaking down a script and building a realistic character and working with others to create a story. Professional acting is a business. It's like starting a company and you are the product that has to be marketed and sold. You need a good product (talent, training and experience) but you also have to understand the industry.
Actors are not "discovered" - it's a huge investment of time, effort and money with absolutely no guarantee of a return on that investment. In the US a professional acting career involves casting directors, talent agents, legal contracts, actor unions, marketing your skills, networking and making contacts in the industry. There are not a bunch of open auditions here that anyone can show up at. For more professional work you have to be invited to audition, usually through a talent agent. And you can't just hire a talent agent, it's more like they choose you.
So before you invest too much in this career - you might want to first make sure that you actually have a talent for acting and performing and that you really understand what's involved. So take some acting classes. Audition for community theaters in your area or student films if you can (ask at a local film school how they find actors for student films). Honestly, if you can't make things happen locally, it's not going to be any easier in the United States. So really make sure it's acting you're passionate about and not the idea of being an actress (because they're two different things).
Then you can look into studying acting in the US if you want. It'll be hard to get in, you'll need the appropriate visas and the like and for most good schools you have to audition to be accepted into the program. So use the Internet to search which schools accept foreign applications and their cost and see if that's a possibility for you. Understand that you can't audition or work professionally as an actor on a student vias. (That would be illegal.) You would need a work visa that allows you to work professionally as an actor here - and those are hard to get.
Your other option would be to start your acting career in Germany. Get your training and experience there and become a well-known and well-respected actor there and then look into coming to the US for other work. I think this second option makes the most sense for you right now.
Good luck.

There is no guarantee for any actor. As I am told almost daily, since I am into theater, it is a slim to none chance of being famous or on Broadway. Statistically, there are millions of people in the US who dream of becoming actors/actresses, so your chance is one in a million. Don't let that ruin your dreams however. Just make sure you have a great back-up plan.

Use the power of the internet.
Make your own channel on Youtube and build a following.
Or you chould just wear a nice dress, come to hollywood and find a good casting couch to propel you to the top.
