Removal of tax lien from credit report?

I lived in Maryland for a few months in 2005, then moved back to Pennsylvania, where I've lived since. I just learned that Maryland placed a tax lien against my credit report. I failed to file a state tax return in Maryland and Maryland claimed my PA income as MD income. Maryland claims that they contacted me "numerous times" via mail before they placed a lien. I never got anything about this until a collection agency sent me notice.

I submitted a state return for 2005 to Maryland. As it turns out they owe ME money. Prior to the lien being placed on my credit rating, my credit score was 765. Now it is 680.

How long will it take for Maryland to remove this lien? I've asked this question point blank to my contacts at the Comptroller's office in Maryland and they will not give me an answer. Thanks!

Update:

The person at the comptroller's office said "if there is no balance due, we will vacate and remove the lien." Sounds like I'll have to wait a while to get this sorted out.

The quickest way... File a dispute with the credit bureaus. They will have 30 days to validate the debt. This will force the state to either validate the debt (which they shouldn't) or remove it.

I had an erroneously placed state tax lien from Missouri placed on my credit report (I never lived in Missouri). I was able to get the tax lien removed by calling the comptroller's office and getting the person's contact information. I then called the credit bureau (in this case Equifax) and giving them the comptroller's information, who verified that it wasn't my lien.

I insisted that Equifax call the comptroller. Not sure if this is what worked, but the tax lien was removed. It took repeated calls. I also wrote Equifax several times.

The whole process can take 90 days after your tax is processed.

You'll have to check your reports in about 5 months to check.

Note: It might just show PAID/$0. I do not think they can remove this.

Your best option is to contact a tax attorney and have it removed. If you do it yourself they will just drag it out. If they get an attorney, it should be resolved in 90 days and the attorney will send you a confirmation.
