Overview over the college football scene?

Question

College football is great and I love to watch it but it also still puzzles me: 
What are the different 'conferences" (SEC, ACC, Big10), teams can obviously change between them? 
What are the national championships, there are several ones? How can teams get 'ranked'? Hpow is the rank determined? 
I haven't found an easy to understand explanation of all that yet.

It would take forever trying to explain college ball to you..  You can go to the NCAA football website, individual team sites, as well as Wikipedia and find tons of info on the college game..  You should watch games and college football programs this coming fall and you'll get a much better perspective..   Good luck....

The NCAA is divided into 3 divisions, Division I, Division II and Division II.  Division I is sub Divided into 2 sub Division, the FBS (Football Bowl sub-division) and FCS (Football Championship sub-division) the FBS is what most people are familiar with.  It is divided into 10 conferences, the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference), AAC, (American Athletic  Conference), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Sec (Southeastern Conference), Pac 12 (Pacific 12 Conference), Mountain West Conference, Mid America Conference, CUSA (Conference USA) and the Sun Belt Conference.  National Championships?  The FCS, Division II and Division III all ave playoffs.  In the FBS the 2 teams ranked #1 and #2 at the end of the regular season play in the National Championship Game.  Starting in the 2014-2015 season the top 4 teams will meet a 4 team playoff.  The team ranked #1 will play the team ranked #4 in a bowl game.  The team ranked #2 will play the team ranked #2 in another bowl game.  The 2 winners will play in the National Championship Game.
