Building a Giant Jenga set for my wedding reception?

I am planning to build a large Jenga set for guests to play at my wedding reception. I do not want to build it out of wood because drunk people and heavy things rarely mix well. Any suggestions on a different medium to build with?

Update:

Beatrice - thank you for your waste of time answer. I live right on the line where Central and Eastern Time Zones meet. I will basically have 6 hours in between my ceremeny and recpetion and need to make sure people have something to do for those hours when we drive the 45 minutes from ceremony to reception, take pictures and gain an hour due to the time zone change. I am having games whether or not you like it. Money is not an issue - we will also be having plenty of food and drinks - including appetizers while guests wait for us to arrive.

Update 2:

Poodie - Not a small wedding but we are also going to have at least one bean bag toss and beer pong (for the purpose of throwing the ball/not drinking). Groom's request of course!

The thing with Jenga is that is does not work if the materials are not heavy enough to stay in place while the other blocks are moved to slide out. A foam Jenga set (or any light weight material) will not work because the tower will tumble on the second turn. You need to make those blocks out of wood.

I have seen plenty of bars with giant wooden Jenga sets played by people much drunker than would be appropriate at a wedding. Even if you were totally sober, the object of Jenga is to get your opponents to dump the wooden blocks all over the floor, so it will be loud and messy and destructive.

Don't set it up near any glass tables or lamps and you should be fine

Games are a great idea and lots of people use them while the wedding party is getting their photos taken.

We sell lots of games like Giant jenga, Giant Chess, lawn bowling or Kubb exactly for this purpose.

If you don't want to use wood for a Jenga set then buy some cardboard boxes that are roughly equal in length to 3x the width (ex 12" x 4" x 2") that way you can fit 3 across. Foam won't slide properly.

Is this inside or outside? That will make a difference also. Beer Pong?? not what we would usually recommend for a wedding but you know your guests better than we do.

Cat is right. This has to be made from wood. Nothing else will really work. Do an internet search. There are a few websites with directions. You just want to make sure all the pieces are sanded well so no one gets splinters. If you can, have it just outside the venue so when the blocks drop no one is startled by the noise and people have enough room to jump out of the way.

Don't listen to anyone saying you shouldn't have games at your wedding. One wedding I went they had games led by the DJ and it was really fun. They were games we could play while in our seats. The bride and groom played a Newlywed Game that was really cute. It really depends on the couple and the crowd. Not everyone is into a stuffy, formal reception. Yours will be a reception people will remember.

I find that any out of the box idea that will make things more memorable is better than coping an idea out of a magazine or book. I say go for it Jenga Rocks!

This is a unique idea. Do you or someone you know use Pinterest? There are tons of wedding ideas on there. I like the suggestion of using foam, however like you mentioned that might be another breakable material. What other games ideas could people play? How about going on YouTube and search for "Minute To Win It" games, those are always fun to watch.

This is a great idea. People do want to play games and generally do different things at weddings. I am bored to death at most weddings because all there is to do is stare at the couple. While I think that foam is your best option, there are light weight woods that would be good too. People aren't going to get THAT drunk so as to hurt themselves on pieces of wood. It they are that drunk, they're going to hurt themselves on the tablecloths.

I've heard of this being done before. Check around with party stores and party rental places. They may already have these and will save you having to make it yourself.

Otherwise you might consider using foam-core from the crafts store and hot glue. The only problem with that is drunk people are likely to break things made of foam-core.
