    You need a lot of skill, knowledge AND gear for wedding photography.

    My basic gear;

    - two DSLR bodies (one as a backup)

    - fast prime or zoom lenses - 50mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8

    - at least 2 off camera speedlights plus modifiers

    You also need to be able to shoot & light in manual - these things aren't shot in Auto modes.

    When you've got that, then you should intern with a professional wedding photographer for at least 6 months.

    I don't know rates in your part of the world but the basics are pretty much the same everywhere. You intend to contract with a couple to record their big day. They will be spending big bucks to get everything right and you arer part of that. Go to an insurance broker and ask him what the premium would be to insure against you, a novice, having to pay for a repeat of the ceremony including all the upfront and all the guest's expenses, possibly $2000, possibly $10000, possibly ten times that for a big wedding between affluent families. That premium is your starting point when calculating your fee. If I were a broker I wouldn't even offer cover to a novice - the risk is too high.

    Many wedding photographers, including myself, are self taught.

    I would start by reading everything you can and practicing what you learn. Then get on some online forums where you can get honest critique and feedback. The more brutal the critique is, the more you will learn. Most of the forums I have seen are mostly a lot of back patting and ego stroking.

    Then, once you have some skills, try to assist or intern with working professionals.

    I advise that you start a Pinterest account. No literally. I'm a photographer, and I always find myself learning new and amazing things under the Photography and Wedding categories. You don't need schooling to become a photographer, you just need to have an open source of creativity and passion for doing so. Scope out different DSLR's. I suggest if you don't already own one, as a starter, to use the Nikon D90, its a high end Amateur camera, and on the lower spectrum for Professionals. If you are looking to spend big bucks on something top of the line, go with the Canon 5D Mark III, 6D or 7D.

    You will also need to invest in some sort of photoshop. Adobe Lightroom 3 is great to screw around with lighting, colors etc. But you definitely need CS6, if you want to get rid of acne, perfect portraits, remove whisps of hair, or even put someone among a different background (like tropics or wooding etc) start looking at CS6 tutorials on Youtube, to see if you are interested or if it would be to hard. It does take a bit of getting used to. And on the Adobe website you can get a free 30 day trial. Adobe Elements is way easier to use if you are just looking to focus on beautifying portraits.

    I hope this helps!

    Find a busy weeding photographer in your area and try to get a job as an assistant.
