Everybody can speak in tongues--even non-Christians. It's just speaking random syllables with repetition and rhythm.

I'm a former Pentecostal preacher that no longer believes the claims of the Bible, and yet I can still speak in tongues and nobody can tell a difference when I do. I can "blaspheme the holy ghost" and still speak in tongues like always, no problem.

There's nothing supernatural or mystical about it, and anybody can do it. It's a pretty good exercise for stress relief or meditation even if you don't believe it's a "holy ghost" possessing you.

    Peace!

I knew a guy who believed he could speak in tongues, and I would trust him with my life. I don't mean I believe that he's speaking in tongues, but I believe he believes he is.

I'm not going to lie, though. It definitely doesn't sound like gibberish. Either he's doing it or he's very talented when it comes to speaking gibberish, because he rolls his tongue and makes sounds that English speakers don't and sometimes can't make.

I wouldn't use that in an argument if I were a Christian, though, since I would be skeptical of the very claims I'm making now and would just pass myself off as a moron.

True speaking in tongues is not gibberish, but the direct infusion of the ability to speak a language. This is a gift of the Holy Spirit. God may grant it where He chooses.

Definitely not. I don't think I've met any believers who can speak in tongues. It is a spiritual gift (given from God for the purpose of building up His church) and is not given to everyone. But, that being said, everyone does have spiritual gifts. (There are several "tests" online that can give you at least an idea of your spiritual gifts.)

You don't need to be born again to speak in tongues, anyone can just make up random words.

gifted? studies done on people speaking in tongues show that no parts of the brain responsible for language were involved - Scientific explanations for these physical and psychological phenomena have been suggested, including mental illness, hypnosis, and learned behavior.

Every person is capable of making stupid gibberish noises, to one degree of talent or another. It's called glossolalia.

How capable of a person is of convincing others that their random noisemaking is the result of a supernatural force, that's another question.

I would rather speak 5 sound words.

. . . . Much better than rattling off some gibberish that only brings attention to myself.
