Squealing under the hood?
I have a 2008 Pontiac Torrent and I noticed a very loud squeal under the hood. It only makes the noise when it's cold out and once it warms up the sound goes away. Took it to the shop and try said it was the serpentine belt so I had it replaced. Two days later I go out to start the car and the noise is still there. It was a little chilly not cold so the sound was gone within a min. So it shows the same symptoms of going away once the car is warm. I know for sure it was the same sound and if it was colder out the sound would be at full strength. Any thoughts?

The squeal is either the belt slipping, the belt-tensioner bearing failing, or possibly low power steering fluid or a failing power steering pump.
If is it simply the belt slipping, you can address it by spraying some belt dressing on the grooved side of the belt. This is a sticky substance that is available in most auto supply stores and serves to give the belt better traction. A word to the wise if this turns out to be the problem--I've often found that after market serpentine belts are more prone to slipping, and prefer to pay a few extra bucks for the dealer OEM belt.
If its the tensioner, these are either spring loaded or screw type devices. If its spring-loaded it is self-adjusting--the spring provides the tension--and you'll simply have to replace it. If tension is derived from a screw driven bracket on the alternator, you can simply drive the screw a little further to push the alternator a little higher to take up the some of the slack in the belt. Just try not to over-tighten it.
If its the power steering pump, check the fluid level and add as needed. Hopefully the pump is not failing, else it will have be be replaced.

Danielle, Please push aside what Ben stated. under no circumstances spray an oil depending lubricant on a product (belt) made up of rubber. it is going to easily shorten the life and ultimately rot the rubber. you may want to opt to purchase a can of organic silicone spray at any vehicle-aspects keep. raise the hood and liberally spray the bottom of the flat serpentine belt with the motor operating. Serpentine belts may be complicated as some very last 60,000 miles and others start up to coach splits on the pushed (underside) a lot quicker. if so it needs to get replaced ASAP. i'm hoping the "boyz" on the dealership bumped off the belt and spun each and each and every of the pulleys via hand to ascertain if there change right into a bearing issue interior the alternator, capacity-guidance pump, water-pump, loafer pulley and *serpentine belt tensioner pulley - which has no genuine bearing as such in it. the easily tensioner would nicely be ok even with the indisputable fact that the crappy sleeve bushing interior would have crapped out. desire someone who truly cared might want to take a even as to absolutely check out your issue. It positive "ain't" demanding to discover even with the indisputable fact that the "jack-asses" opt to have an interest sufficient to really look. you may want to opt to leave the vehicle on the dealership in one day and characteristic then start up it up interior the AM with a view to reproduce the time of day even as the noise takes position.
