Baby Talk at with Dogs?

Does this really soothe a fearful or scared dog?

Most ppl I see at my job or even when I visit the vet, participates in baby talk. I have to admit it seems to get the dogs attention as opposes to a deep confident voice.

What do feel about baby talk?

Do you 'baby talk' your dog as a pup but change up when they get older?

Update:

At the clinic....the baby talk isn't really goo-goo ga ga....its more like 'your so cute....its ok....come here sweety' as opposed to a firm "NO" "COME" "STOP"

Baby talking to a nervous or fearful dog will only serve to make it worse as it will assume there is actually something to worry about.

A confident approach will allay its its fears a lot more.

I`m not really into baby talking my dogs at any time but I do often refer to myself as "Mummy" when talking to them. But then i`m just a daft old biddy.

I mean what exactly is baby talk? "There There, coochi cooch don`t cwy?" Erk! No thanks. Jmo.

Baby talk normally soothes a dog because they associate a 'baby voice' with praise.

Because when a dog does a good thing just like with a child most dog owners praise them with a high pitched baby voice telling them 'Oh what a good dog you are, oh yes you are..'

I personally believe it doesn't do any harm to a pup or older dog :)

Savannah is right. Baby talking scared dogs increases their anxiety and feeds into their fear. Baby talking happy dogs does make them more excited and can be a sort of reward for them. My doggy likes it!

I think the baby talk is for the benefit of the human rather than the dog. I guess we think of dogs as children. I talk to all my dogs like that and worse, I answer for them. I enjoy it. I'm sure they could care less what I say and in what language.

I never talk to a scared or fearful dog, I simply crouch down to their level let them sniff my hand and wait for them to approach me or give them some treats.

I do baby talk my dogs when they are doing good things and are happy, that gets them excited.

Baby talking a scared or nervous dog doesn't help it, it actually increases the dogs anxiety. But I always baby talk dogs when they are happy and doing good things. :)

I don't even 'baby talk' to human babies. So no, I don't baby talk to my dog or any dog.

I don't think it soothes a fearful or scared dog.

I do not baby talk to my dogs. I talk to them in a normal calm voice and they listen to be better. My male dog does not, when anyone talk to him in a loud voice. They do not understand baby talk and they like it when you are talking to them in a normal tone.

No, I don't. I treat dogs with respect and as dogs, not as human babies.

Don't really know if dogs 'like it' or not, but I doubt it, because they pick up our energy when we talk to them and they are probably off put by this. :)
