Behavior amongst....Shelter/Pet/Working?
Do you or have you ever truly trusted a dog?
I hate to be a bigot, but I see such a difference in dog behavior pertaining to their personal situations and training.
The dogs at the shelter come from the streets, abuse, unfortunate situations, and I have to say they come to be the most ppl friendly dogs I've met. Maybe suffering from separation anxiety, but willing and ready to be around people.
Pets at the vet clinic and daycare=fear aggressive or attention whores or animal aggressive.
Working dogs act like you're not even there and could careless unless your their owner. And some will let you pet them but immediately after....they dismiss your presence.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Do you disagree?
Have you noticed different?
Can you tell by the animals eyes and body language whether its friendly, aggressive, submissive, scared?
(My vet claims to have this ability just by looking into a dogs eyes)
I'm really into animal behavior and seem to be the only one at my jobs that really want to get to the bottom of dog behavior or care that some dogs are just fear aggressive.
BTW
Because of my natural instincts and self preservation, I DON'T trust any dog that is not mine. As far as mine, they are trust worthy according to what I know they will and won't do.
4 Her....my trainer owns working dogs. Those dog will do the familiarization process of smelling your hand and that's it. They move on to sit at their owners side.
I surely believe dogs at the vet are frightend more often than not. I go on other ppl who know some of these dogs personally, and yet still in that environment these dogs are so frightened they bite or growl. But true point.
GREEK I completely understand that mentality. Dogs will be dogs. Some are obviously untrustworthy and the others....I believe are circumstantial. If I know a dog is food aggressive, I don't trust or implore food into our interaction
WryDachs that last part got me (in a good way....'to understand dogs'). Hear hear!!!

A dog that fawns indiscriminately over people simply has poor impulse control, many are also naturally more timid so their behavior is more appeasement than anything. I personally don't like a dog that is all over everyone all of the time. The world does not revolve around them and not everyone loves them.
My dog is a rescue, but probably was bred as a working dog and certainly has been trained as a competition dog (working-light version). He, like any dog with a decent working/competition temperament knows how to interact politely with others but also does not fawn over strangers or become obnoxious about it. Trained dogs are usually friendly but not pushy.
Shelter dogs have a combination of training (folks who get a shelter dog are willing to put in a little bit of work - more than the impulse-at-the-pet-store folks) with often crappy genetics that make their appeasement behaviors more prevalent. Dogs currently in a shelter are usually stressed to the point where they are looking for someone - anyone - who is stable to follow around.
I think that part of your perception is also when you meet these dogs - dogs in a vet's office are frightened, dogs in a daycare are forming a pack hierarchy and so are on edge (the original studies on wolf pack hierarchies don't apply in general to dogs, but do apply to canines forces into confined situations with unrelated canines). How would you know a working dog was a working dog if it wasn't on the job? In that situation I sure *hope* that their focus is not on greeting a random stranger!
I agree that I don't trust any dog I don't know. People are surprised that I "love dogs" when I don't bear-hug, kiss, and smother every dog that I meet. I love dogs and I understand that dogs are predatory carnivores who don't have words to let me know I am pushing them over their boundaries. I am pretty adept at reading body language (thank you years of kennel and vet's office and training classes work) but I've also met too many dogs that have been corrected for giving proper warnings without actually being corrected for the underlying aggression - these dogs lash out "without warning" because they've been taught not to give warning.

a million: i think of what you're asking right it is the thank you to differentiate a discovered habit from a genetic concern. in the commencing up look you are able to not except you have relatively labored with a TON of canines. you may desire to artwork with the canines's themes. while you're using genuine preparation innovations and that they don't artwork in 2 or so weeks? Temperament concern. canines with good temperaments recover from abuses and unfavourable preparation promptly. #2: I additionally dislike behaviorists, it is a fad, they clarify why a canines misbehaves and advise gimmicks to repair those issues and fee out the ying yang for their "help". I implore you to look on the questions asked in this communicate board that start up "we've considered 3 diverse behaviorists and...". genuinely anybody can call themselves something regrettably. yet, a good coach can fix and handle maximum behaviors genetic or not. in case you have a canines who bites because of the fact of a improper temperament, yet he's an obedient nicely knowledgeable canines and you prepare him to not chew then: he does not chew. concern solved granted you're taking the stairs to make specific the canines respects the correction extra desirable than the gratification of doing what he needs. #3: -replied- #4: Of the 1000's if not hundreds of canines i've got knowledgeable. purely a million or 2 have been so genetically screwed that I recommended they be saved secured exterior in a zoo high quality get away data enclosure or placed down (all wolf hybrids fall into this catagory). #5: The canines could be saved as long because of the fact the owner is accountable and retains it from toddlers and the final public.

I've only owned former shelter/pound dogs and they've been AMAZING behavior wise and in every other respect. Most of the breeder/pet store dogs I've known via family and friends have had many more behavioral problems. Then again, we've taken our dogs to doggy school and that may be what made the difference, too. Regardless, sheter dogs are the dogs for me (and my hubby)! :)
EDIT: I'm absolutely shocked by these people who do not trust their OWN dogs, especially pets. I wonder if these people have outdoor-only dogs or if they don't take care of their dogs or just breed their dogs for money. Or maybe their dogs are so inbred that they're neurotic? Is that possible, idk?
Anyhow, I treat my dogs with love and respect and in turn they treat me with love and respect. Obviously I wouldn't pull on my dog's tail or hit her and then expect her not to react (I do neither of those things anyhow) but I can trim nails, put in eye drops and do other things my dogs don't enjoy because they love and TRUST me.
I believe that many dogs are trustworthy and that it's often the "OWNERS" who are lacking...

Nope, I do not completely trust any dogs..that includes my own. I mean, after all, they are are animals. They sometimes act on impulse.
While my dogs are friendly to people, they don't seek out strangers. If someone makes kissy sounds to get their attention, my dogs won't pay attention. They've been taught to ignore strangers, strange sounds etc. If someone wants to meet my dogs, they have to ask me, then I give the command "Go Say Hi".
While I love dogs to, I don't run at strange dogs I don't know and try to hug them. Someone who does that, while they may love dogs, they never bothered to understand them.

For me, I have only and will only deal with working dogs, they are the ones I have any use for. I have seen and been around dogs of all types and i will tell you that I trust NONE of them, pets especially.
Most have nerve issues and more then a few don't mind taking out those issues on you.
