Her real name wasn't even Emily Rose; it was Anneliese Michel. She was mentally ill, and the priests went to trial and were found guilty of negligent homicide, but they just got a slap on the wrist.

The mind is a fickle yet powerful thing. As long as our surrounding keeps telling us something and/or as long as we keep telling ourselves that something, we start to believe that and as such we become trapped within our own minds while it literally distorts our perspective on reality meaning we also start to act on it accordingly. Add to that any mental problems one may be suffering from.
