On the surface yes Cypriots took a stand and that makes them look more gutsy than Greeks. But i am wondering what their motives were when their parliament voted against this "tax" on the bank depositors. What actually happened behind the scenes. Whose support they have in order to feel so "brave" and go against the IMF and Troika?

Maybe the Russians who have invested a lot down there pressed them to say no. Maybe the MPs had their own money or their family members' or relatives' money in those banks too and didn't want to lose it. Who knows WHY they voted this way... I am not sure it's only because of patriotic feelings.

As for your second question about the Greek church, yes it is true, and I am wondering the same as well, it has not helped much these last 3-4 years during which Greece is suffering. It has a lot of wealth accumulated from the money the Greek believers have been offering to them and it is not offering it to save us now. That makes you wonder what their motives are as well. Why not grant us money to minimize our debt? Why don't they sell their estates (and they have a lot) to bail us out?

I guess the best people to ask and who would give you a better answer reflecting how the Greek church thinks about this matter are the members of the clergy. I can only assume things about why they haven't stepped up to save the day! I am sure they think that they have done a great lot and have offered much help and relief. That's how they probably see it.

    So go figure...

The Cypriot Archbishop Chrysostomos declared that he places the wealth of the Cypriot church in the service of the Cypriot Government in order to help save the country against the Euro demands.

That is a very brave and totally Christian stance in the times of troubles for the island.

Unfortunately, the Greek Archbishop did not do anything of that magnitude nor did he stand against the Euro demands.

Not all people are the same and certainly not all see things the same way. It is possible that in view of his Cypriot counterpart may do something about it, but I doubt it, since the rest of the clique are not so inclined.

The stand Cyprus has taken in the matter may be something that Europe faces for the first time and remains to be seeing what will come next. Only time will show if their decision was the right one or not. Certainly as a national stand is commendable, but....... what will follow???

To zoumi einai oi AOZ and that goes for Greece too. Germans look ahead in time and they try to be the masters of the game. I feel this is all a game of chess.
