What qualities would be expected?
I've found that experience is preferred in the animal care field, sometimes over educational background.
If you are or were a hiring manager at a kennel, vet clinic, or animal care company what qualities do you look for in a potential employee? ( this is for a vet assistant position )
Do you prefer education over experience?
Would you take a chance on a person with just passion and desire to work with animals, but the candidate has no formal training?

I would look for someone who is excellent in dealing with people. You would be working with doctors, other techs, and educating the clients. A bright face with a willing spirit are so important. I would probably check out the person's car if I could!! I would look for a neat one that is clean and without a bunch of junk inside. I would want someone who was honest and dependable. No matter how good a person is at skills like blood draws, it doesn't matter if they are always calling out.
Our boss would rather hire smart, outgoing people and train them, then to hire someone who is arrogant from another hospital. They tend to think they already know everything and can be difficult to work with, because "we did it another way where I was before."
So off the top of my head:
People with some college tend to do better.
Outgoing, friendly
Neat
Dependable
Good work ethic
Non smokers actually out perform the smokers (sorry smokers)
Honest (I would check backgrounds )
Someone who loves people and animals
Quite often those with large animal experience seem to be better --they aren't so afraid of the pets!
Experience with excellent references is always good --not just experience.

Formal training and education are always a plus, but give me someone who's BTDT anyday. Seeing pictures in a book and words on a page are great, but experience is what I lean toward. Nothing teaches better than "hands on"
