Get a dSLR with an 18-270mm or 18-300mm zoom lens. Any dSLR will do. They are all basically the same. There is no such thing as a professional camera. In photography, the word professional refers to a person who uses the camera to earn money.

When you throw out the term "professional" camera, most people think of the high-end $6,000 (and up) cameras. Some people think that any camera looking like a DSLR is a professional camera, but in reality, the chief advantage of a professional camera is durability, and high-end features. These are only found on the multi-thousand dollar cameras.
So try to avoid the term "professional" or you will get the responses you did above.
You can upgrade to three different types of cameras.
First, if you wan to stay cheap, consider upgrading to a high-end compact, such as a Nikon P7700 or Canon G15. Even though they are still compact cameras, they have much higher performance. The minimum cost for one of these - the Nikon P310 starts out at $200 or so, and goes up to around $500 for the others.
Next, if you want to go a bit better, consider a mirrorless camera. There are many different choices here, anywhere between a Micro 4/3rds, Nikon 1 series, Sony NEX, among others. These all have interchangeable lenses, but are still rather small footprint cameras. Costs vary between around $300 to $600 for a camera with kit lens. But the cost goes up for additional lenses.
Then finally, the big boys are the DSLRs. And even then, an entry-level DSLR is going to be as low as $600~$700. Again, you can spend a lot more than this for lenses, up to $10,000 if you want to.
And the high-end of the DSLR market are where the professional cameras are.

Professional cameras start at about $4,000. Do you have 4-grand? If not then I suspect you're looking for a consumer level dslr camera.
I'm a Canon guy and I only recommend what I own and therefore know. Any of the Rebel models will be a fine camera. Since this will be your first I'd suggest the Canon t3 = about $500.

If high level of zoom is your priority, then buying a DSLR lens with a large focal length ( greater the focal length, bigger the image of the object) will turn out to be very expensive. It's best you go for a point and shoot camera with a large zoom lens.
