attaching wooden shutters to house?

The house is made of wooden shingles, and the shutters have just been nailed next to the windows. One nail at the top, and one nail at the bottom.

When it gets windy, the shutters rattle. (Surprise!) Any thoughts on attaching them more securely? Do I just put a big lag screw in each corner and hope the shingles and whatever is underneath will be enough to get some grip? I can easily get to the inside wall next to the windows, and I've determined with a stud sensor with electrical detection that there are no live wires near the windows.

The stepped angles of the shingles seems to rule out putting a bead of caulk around the back of the shingles because only the points of the shingles at the bottom touch the shutter.

I tried taking them off (with only two nails holding them, they easily slip on and off), but the house doesn't look right, possibly because every other house on the street has the same style.

From the inside, I have wallboard on top of standard wood studs. I don't know what is between the studs and the shingles on the outside. The house was built in 1968 in New England.

Thanks.

G'day, a few options for you as I'm not sure of shingles thickness or strength .1- anchor screws, ($3-$5 from hardware store) drill a small hole to feed them in, the spring will open them up then you tighten (place a self adhering weather seal or soft foam lining between shutter and wall before tightening) I'd probably put 3 screws per side for extra support. 2- if you can easily get behind the shingles use a piece Of timber to act as a backing that effectively thickens the nails penetration depth (though I'd use a screw nonetheless) and still use 3per side. 3- use a hard setting filler (ie liquid nails) to squirt into a small hole where you want the screws, once it sets it'll lock, (just screw in before it sets totally solid). I'd still use a foam strip between with all options, hope this helps

I just found a site with thousands of downloadable woodworking plans, it s really great. You can check it out here ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info ) Here is an honest review : If you want to start a woodworking project, you need all the necessary information, including schematics, blueprints, materials lists, dimensions etc. That is where TedsWoodworking comes in. The plans are clearly drawn and there're step-by-step explainations of how the plan should be done and put together. There are several other sites whose collection of plans have the dimensions totally wrong without any indication of parts lists, material lists or the tools needed. If you're one of those people who have bought plans like this in the past, TedsWoodworking will change your perception. In Ted's Woodworking you will get everything you need: Diagrams which are detailed with a full set of dimensions, step-by-step instructions how to start your project and the necessary materials for that particular project. All the woodworking tools you will need: If you are a beginner or have done some woodworking you will find these plans easy-to-follow as the instructions are very clearly written. The woodworking plans are straightforward so they are not complicated at all. Even if you are a total newcomer to woodworking you will simply be able to master all the techniques that are needed and the woodworking skills very quickly by following the concise and clear instructions. Another thing which is so great about these woodworking plans is that there have been some videos included and there are some to guide you in how to build benches home furniture dog houses bird feeders sheds and much much more. There is also a lifetime member acess included in the package and you get these extras for no cost to you as they are free with no additional charges at all! This alone is worth the entire price for TedsWoodworking. Ted Mcgrath is a very dedicated and experienced woodworker who knows what he is talking about when it comes to woodworking and DIY projects s he has been a woodworker for many many years. There is only one drawback that we could find and that being with 16,000 woodworking plans you are bound to get some which look a little disorganized but that is understandable as it is very difficult to place all these plans into their proper categories. Secondly, it might take you a little longer to do the downloads on because of the size of them. But the members area include an option to upgrade to the DVD so you can save time on downloading. I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars. Here's the bottom line: If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you SHOULD use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Check the site: ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info )

Personally, I think if the shutters are merely decorative, I'd get rid of them. So often they are of the wrong size for the window they are supposed to cover.

Just because everyone has them, it doesn't make them correct.

Here's a great article on shutters with some great photographs on *right* and *wrong* shutters.

medium density fiberboard.. (MDF). i have used this in my technology GCSE to make a chair that has had alot of use and is still going strong, i don't know about the price because i didn't have to buy it, but if it was my school that bought it, it shouldn't cost too much because of their budget. and i also think that wood glue would be the best idea for making a doll house :) hope this was of some use x

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
