How was Heath Ledger's performance of the Joker different to anyone else's?

I don't think it was really that different to the others I've seen: Caesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill - even Michael McKean.

Everyone says he was "darker" but that's just down to having a harsher script, a grungier outfit, nastier scars and untidy makeup - put any of those other actors in the Dark Knight and they'd have probably done the same damn thing. Jack Nicholson was in the Shining for god's sake - he's more than capable of doing a "dark" performance.

Basically I'm saying that the *characterisation* in that film was darker - not the performance per se.

SO - without saying that "he was darker" what do you think the actual differences were with his performance?

Bonus - talk about all their respective performances and take the comic depictions into consideration if you like.

because when you are an actor, no one tells you how to be, you simply look at the words on the paper and get a little background information and make it your own. Heath Ledger was by far the darkest, and that doesn't mean other people can't do dark but it is the place he took that character to. When you see Jim Carey playing the joker, yeah he is being the bad guy but his character wasn't dark, it was more fun. Health Ledger made you believe he was that darkness that he portrayed.

From everything to the way he was constantly licking his tongue and the things he did with his mouth, the way he spoke and moved, when you watched that movie, you see this dark, disturbed character that seems to have no morals. It's every little thing he added to his character. Yes he was the joker but did you find yourself laughing at the crazy, or realizing he was so crazy you were left wondering what on earth was he going to do next.

I don't think anyone could of taken that role to the place he did. Jack Nicholson, I love, I think he is a fabulous actor and has been around forever, but not even he could take that script to the dark place where Heath Ledger took it. But you really can't compare actors to what they would of done in a movie, or compare batman to the dark knight because they are totally different scripts, different movies, and as far as the make up and stuff goes, it's also in a different time. Movies have become such a more greater experience, special effects have far surpassed what they used to be.

Heath Ledgers Performancee can't compare, that is simply myopinionon.

The preparation, Ledger locked himself in a motel for 6 months prior to the film to get himself into the mood of being the Joker. He essentially trained himself to be a schizophrenic. The Jokes he made were more crude, and his performance was less theatrical then other jokers. In the sense that he made The Joker less about funny themed torture devices and more about being a ruthless killer. That's all my opinion though.

Ledger's Joker was more real than other portrayals. His portrayal shows a real danger with his grit and inconsistency.

Everyone else came off as more clownish, whereas Ledger shows you the dangerous trixter.
