I am a conservative republican and will admit that I thought that that was a total gaffe at first. But, during the 3rd debate, the foreign policy debate, Obama brought up the comment and Romney did explain what he meant and I understand him now. He said that Russia is our #1 geopolitical foe. What he meant is that they're the nation that rivals us the most in the UN and on the foreign policy stage. He did say that Iran is our #1 national security threat, which I definitely agree with, but never said that Russia was one.

His diplomatic knowledge is rather limited, and severely out of date. Probably gets his updates from Limbaugh or Faux.
