Why do we not coordinate Summer Time with the USA?
With the EU in financial and economic free fall the UK's interests lie westward. So forget about adopting Central European Time and think about the annoying gap of an extra hour that opens up twice a year when we change our clocks one week out of sync with North America. Why cannot we conform? My own transatlantic phone calls always get caught out by this stupid difference.

a better thing is why do we have it at all? i believe it was started by germany in WW1 and to me me is completely unnecessary.

I suppose because the UK lies in higher latitudes than the USA, but of course Canada accepts US daylight saving time. And this year the Americans postponed the change over by another week, so had we made the adjustment suggested we would have been caught out (as I was indeed myself). The British government's longterm aim is to adopt Central European Time, and presumably, European Summer Time too. Now that the SNP is in power in Scotland, the inconvenience for Scotland can be ignored, so expect the government to seize its opportunity, to change the clocks to favour Europe and to **** a snoock at the SNP within the next couple of years!

We did try it in the 60s/70s. But people in Scotland said that they were sending their children to school during the dark in the winter months.

The UK uses GMT, we don't use CET, why should we conform to other countries just to please a few people.
