Well, he is supposed to be a little annoying, which is part of his character. His pedantic attitudes typically grate the nerves of the other principle characters. Honestly, if I knew him, I would probably have to sock him in the face from time to time to stop indulging in silly corrections, such as insisting on pronouncing encyclopedia as encyclopaedia.
