Shouldn't religions too evolve in time?

All religions are based on some eternal truths, but they too have some beliefs and practices that need change and review in time.

I am a Hindu. Hinduism had practices like casteism, animal sacrifices etc. that have thankfully gradually lost popularity,- thanks to the work of reformers. In time they are being left, - would be good if it was still faster. But even with this, the real essence of Hinduism remains strong, gets strengthened.

Do other religions too have a need for evolution? Is it already happening? Or, is there no need to change anything?

I have absolutely no hesitation to agree with you regarding the necessity of amendment in religious practices which are out-dated from time to time.

As in the case of every religion, there is a mixture of the eternal and universal ethical and spiritual elements along with the temporary and local socio-political elements. These represent the two aspects of every religious tradition, firstly, as a path to God and next as a socio-political ordering of human life which what the Indian Sanatan Dharma, or Hinduism calls, Sruti, representing the first, and Smrti, representing the second in varying dimensions.

The Sruti stands for the body of eternal and impersonal truths valid for all times and peoples. And the Smruti stands for the temporal and the local elements; and because they are temporal and local, they cannot be universal. And Hinduism emphasizes that they need to be changed age after age, in response to changing socio-economic conditions. For proper understanding of any teaching, history, epics etc the meanings of the two terms Sruti and Smrti should be understood. It would be worth noting here that the stagnation and decay of religions commenced, as in the case of Sanatan Dharma in recent centuries, with the dominance of the Smrti over the Sruti elements. It was a dominance of the fundamentalist group over the ever-diminishing rational and humanist group which advocated the scientific approach and the stressing more and more of the eternal, universal, spiritual elements.

    They can't - they're set in concrete...

"Or, is there no need to change anything?"

    Naahhh... xianity likes looking stupid...

Bible is sentimental speculation and replacement theology at its finest lacking any meaningful philosophy that was had by the Judaism that reputedly spawned it.

AND, it's filled with lotsa ignorant mistakes:

Rabbits do not chew their own cud.

People can't float to the sky.

    Rabbits do not have hoofs.

The Earth is not a circle.

    The earth is not flat.

    Pi does not equal 3.

    Donkeys can't talk.

    Bats are not birds.

    Snakes can't talk.

The cure for leprosy is not rubbing birds blood all over a person.

    Etc

Oh, and that bloke spending three days inside a fish is a bit suss, don't you think?

How could you possibly devise a science course around such nonsense?

Absolutely yes.Don,t know, but looking at your question it seems that my soul has entered in to your skin because same thoughts i was propagating on this forum few time back however arguing with Islamic brigade led to suspension of my that account :)

Edit:- You can see some of the pathetic answers from the followers of Abraham,s branch of religion, the fact of that matter Hinduism evolves because it does not depends on the orthodoxy of some individual prophet and single book.

All relgion are man made to understand the supreme truth and also to control the society with certain set of rules and regulations (kind of constitution), one should keep evolving to come out of medieval irrelevant tradition and customs.Because except God nothing is permanent. So ever changing nature of things should not be stopped by naming it God,s law.

It happened with orthodoxy Brahminism in the past until they were challenged by Gautam Buddha .When there was Human sacrifice was prevalent during the time of abrahim he introduced animal sacrifice in place of it by giving a God angle to the story. This was revolutionary step at that time but poor animals are still being killed in the current times in the name of God .

Similarly Prophet Muhammad introduced better rights for woman and fixed the marriage of 1 man t o 4 ,it was a revolution at that time but polygamy is still followed and what was a better deal for woman during medieval times is now seems to be gross injustice.

The main reason that someone don,t want to change themselves. You can,t help them.Thank God i was born in Hindu family :)

Man made religions have absolutism and are frozen in time they were given.

Only Sanatan Dharma is not man made and has no hang ups. This would change to adopt findings and discoveries of science. Since, this religion is based on duty, not much change is needed. As far set of values is concerned, normally, there is not much change and this would be by and large remain unchanged. Way of worship is secondary and has little importance in Sanatan dharma.

Ability to achieve salvation is any way independent of religion (external paraphernalia).

Thus, for Sanatan dharma, there is little to evolve, while man made religions would look more and more irrelevant with time.

Why should eternal truth be changed; for what purpose and reason; and is man really capable of doing so; i.e change the eternal truth...

    1. CAN THE FACTS ABOUT THE SUN THE MOON THE STARS THE PLANETS ETC. BE CHANGED;

    2. CAN THE FACTS ABOUT THE BEHAVIOR OF HUMAN NATURE AND HUMAN MIND BE CHANGED.

    3. CAN THE FACTS ABOUT HUMAN SUFFERING SORROWS, PAINS AND ILLNESSES BE CHANGED.

    4. CAN THIS FACT ALSO BE CHANGED THAT THE YET UNKNOWN KNOWLEDGE OF THE ABOVE ONLY AND NOTHING ELSE; ESPECIALLY OF THE MATERIAL WORLD; NEEDS TO BE KNOWN; FIRST AND FOREMOST; BY SELF;

    5. CAN THIS FACT ALSO BE CHANGED THAT THE SELF ONLY AND NOTHING ELSE NEEDS TO BE VIEWED WITH A NEW VIEW POINT

At best, man can do; is to use the beliefs and practices of the religion that he was born into; not only for exploring and questioning them; with a scientific attitude and bent of mind; VIZ-VIZ THE ABOVE POINTS; but also for seeking, finding, and gaining the knowledge of that eternal truth; WITH COURAGE; on which his religion was based; and finally for using such knowledge to help mankind with.

How many Hindus or for that matter; any body else; really know that THE SHREEMAT BHAGWAT GITA; mentions about the ability of the following type and kind of knowledge only as the real source of origins; of the knowledge of eternal truth; which every living being should earn , gain and use for helping the self to become truly religious or sacred; in the efforts of own to perform and act.

    It mentions about the

1.The knowledge of sacrifice; and the wisdom of the understanding thereof;CHAPTER 4 VERSE 34

    2. The knowledge of formless and qualified aspect of god CHAPTER 7 VERSE 1 AND 2

    3. The knowledge of manifest and unmanifest divinity; which is a sovereign science; CHAPTER 9 VERSE 2

    4. The knowledge of the divine or the supreme , effulgent, primal, and infinite cosmic form of the lord; as possessed of wisdom, glory, energy, strength, valor and effulgence CHAPTER 11 VERSE 2

    5. The knowledge, power, and ability of the divine eye of the lord CHAPTER 11 VERSE 8

    6. The knowledge of truth; especially of the five elements; the ego; the intellect; the unmanifest; the ten organs of perception and action; the mind; the five objects of senses; together with the knowledge of truth of; desire, aversion, pleasure, pain, physical body, consciousness, firmness, absence of pride, freedom from hypocrisy, non violence, forbearance, straightness of body/ speech / and mind, devout service of preceptor, internal and external purity, steadfastness of mind and controll of body, mind and senses.

ALL THAT WHICH NEEDS TO BE CHANGED IS MAN'S OWN ATTITUDE TOWARDS HIS OWN RELIGION , GOD AND THE LORD; WITH THE HELP OF THE ABOVE KNOWLEDGE

Silverback, the point for us to be in the international is to augment spiritually. alongside with that,we are to "evolve" as human beings. faith can evolve if the human beings interior the stated idea, can study now to not take issues as "status quot". yet for the most section, faith has a not basic time evolving. yet in case you the position to seem at...nicely shall we are saying the former and new testaments. (in basic terms shop an open concepts about this) interior the former we were given practise guide lines and guidelines to stay through. We the position at a element the position we choose this structure to practise guide our lives. interior the hot..... we are shown that we are able to residing from our hearts and "spirit". In doing so all of us comprehend we do not choose the guidelines, because in our heart and spirit, we can do what's awesome. you may want to shop in concepts, that all and diverse religions are awesome proper and mutually incorrect. existence isn't about faith. existence is about being in spirit and understanding that we (and each and each problem else) are all one. It should but no the three major religions prefer to remain unchanged. Why? Because they are afraid of change, they are afraid that change will lead to a decline in their religion.

For example, that is why many Christians object to social and scientific progress.

religions do evolve.... there is alot of tollerance for things today that religious people a few years back would have frowned upon. God is one and the same. It is our perspective of who he is that changes. As we grow, our viewpoints change, our thoughts, our way of life. It is that change that gives us the wisdom to see God in our everyday life. Religion is just a tool we use to understand God. So its only natural as we began to mature in our spirituality that our beliefs will change, and our religion must change along with it.

    1. No religion is based based on eternal truths, but they are bundle of misconceptions.

    2. Animal sacrifice is still continued and not stopped. U have not visited such places in Karnataka. They still sacrifice animals in the name of Gods and Goddesses.

    3. Religions are meaningless now and they should be completely abolished.

    Hi,

Yes I think there is big big need of evolution in religions. .they should also upgrade time to time..

and I think all other religions are also evolving accordingly to time. its directly proportional to human behaviour I would say.. as the life style is changing and thinking of each individual is also changing. So I think its all fine and is good for future !
