How relevant it is for religions to have tolerance for other religions and diverse views?

Most religions have compassion as the central message, - which seems to be a must to develop a capacity to see God in everything and all around us.

Yet, so many religions, appear to rubbish diverse views and teaching of other faiths. Though they teach similar things like compassion, honesty, good conduct and humility etc. as other religions. Message of most of the religions is that there is one omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient God. Even Hinduism known to have many God has the same message. "All forms are His."

How relevant is it for religion to insist that 'one shoe fits all'. 'It is my way or the highway'?

It is difficult to expect this from religions that man made, are frozen in time and based on absolutism.

Religion bind people response through diktats and if these diktats are followed by large number of people without reasoning, then only question of tolerance arise. Any religion that bypass reasoning, would be intolerant to point of view of others.

Reasoning and logic need to be a part of religion to evolve and those religions which lack this would always be intolerant being frozen in time.

Absolutely relevant because now is the time of Multi cultural secular democracy , and there is need of testing of religion in the regard of tolerance and diversity.

Fortunately i am from India and all the religion born here are passed with flying colors on this test :)

  • How relevant is it to use Christianity and Islam as models for the rest of the world's religions?

Most religions aren't concerned with what other people do. They're deeply rooted in particular communities.

Speaking in regards to Christianity, We do have a one shoe fit all God so to speak, unfortunately many people don't see it that way.

Now as for tolerance of other religions (their belief and practices) a christian is to hate what God hates. Unfortunately some christians think that means hating the person who has the different belief.

God don't share His glory with any other god (god lower case means anything man sets up as a god as in false gods).

Its a Christians responsibility to spread the good news or gospel of the kingdom of God and of Jesus Christ, in love, compassion and patience, however many fail on that level because I think they try to teach what they do not understand themselves or they are to new, or they simply want to do it but don't' have that calling. thus their pride gets in the way.

Only our Creator tells you to prove Him, no other god in any other religion does that. And if you seek Him, then He will in fact prove his word. That don't mean you can test Him.

No matter what other religion a person has if it differs from Christianity, we are to be Christ like, that includes showing respect not for their religion or belief but because as a person we all are created in the image of God, and that alone makes the person deserving of respect.

    Go with God

Yes, many religions have compassion as the the central message but none follow them. Its because they are all sham and surreptitiously aim to grow in numbers and proclaim their superiority than serving any real humanitarian purpose.

It's not a question of relevance. It's a question of respect for others, tolerance, and acceptance. Tolerance is where you tolerate other people, but believe that your own position is somehow superior to theirs. Acceptance is where you believe that their religion and way of life is as legitimate as your own beliefs and way of life.

The problem is, we have religious leaders talking about mutual respect and tolerance, but some others, and their followers who don't believe in acceptance. They believe in trying to change the minds of others through violence.

No religion is right or one religion is right. They all claim things that are mutually exclusive. If no religion is right, then you are also making a truth claim. So, no matter what everyone makes a truth claim. It all comes down to what you believe.

Without poking their nose, let them mind their business. It is enough.
