Disappointment with religions is no reason to turn away from God. Agree?

Religions may disappoint due to irrational dogmas, superstition, indoctrination or intolerance to diverse views. But this aught to be no reason to turn away from God. Religion and most of their indoctrinations have been framed and, or later interpreted by humans and therefore may disappoint. Spirituality which is also inherent in all religions, is the real thing.

We must make effort to grow in spirituality not in religious dogma. Though, one must agree that most religious phylosophies have positive to offer as well, eg..Compassion the central rule of all religions. Unortunately forgotten, the true purpose of religion was spirituality, persuit for reality inward, not outward.

Even if we are disappointed by religion, we must not let go of Spirituality, of God. Do you agree?.

"It is ok to be born in religion. It is best if we dont die in one."

"There is only one true religion, religion of love.

There is only one cast, cast of humanity.

There is only one language, language of the heart.

There is only ONE God, and He is omnipresent."

Update:

Friends, I do not engage in the futility of trying to prove existinence of God. Sense, sorry if that disappoints, it is not for me to show evidence.

I see that Aethism is a gratifying sport. But, I seek my indulgences elsewhere.

If you believe that God doesnt exist, then, that is the case for you. True.

But what you and I understand from the word 'God' could be entirely different. For me He is real and my reason for bliss.

there are two types of god - one - God himself the other created by man - using his name to tyrannize the masses

there are two types of religion - one - send by god with all his manifestations, messengers, messiahs. the other created by man - usually and always the clergy - to tyrannize us into subservience and bondage

we must also not confuse between spirituality and religiousness - totally 2 different concepts and practices. being religious doesnt necessarily lead to spirituality.

spirituality is not burning incence and goes around with prayer beads and oms oms

rituals are superstitions that got entwined with religion to preserve the clergy's livelihood.

religion is not only individual salvation and it must include service to humanity.

religion must not be divorced from earthly life, issues and must inspire not instil fear

religion comes from the word relegare - to unite to bind

so if any religion were to say theirs is better thats not religion

look at priests - they are religious and far from spirituality.

spirituality is attainable with and without the presence of religion.

so we must open our minds and delve deeper into this

While I hold no brief for religions, and I am from a country (India) which is not basically religious, but only dharmic (Sanaatanadharma) of which many of us are proud about being in the nature of free life-style, non compulsory, carrying with it no threatening fatwas for disowning it, I would still do not agree that disappointment with religion is the reason for turning away from God. The reasons I list below:

    1. Adamance that 'unless scientifically proved I will not agree with existence of God'. But such people are agreeing that their existence is real, which is not also scientifically resolved!

    2. Lethargy to put forth an alternative theory for convincing existence of all!!

    3. Their ego, which, however, strangely does not feel shy in accepting Nature as the creator, nor do they feel they owe an explanation as to what is nature and how could it be a cause!!

Such people will turn away from God, whether religions are disappointing or not.

Take for example, India, which did not have a religion (but only common dharma based life-style) from the beginning until the advent of Jainism followed by buddhism; still the atheists did not accept god.

Acceptance of a supernatural claim tends to promote cooperative social relationships. This communication demonstrates a willingness to accept, without skepticism, the influence of the speaker in a way similar to a child's acceptance of the influence of a parent. By encouraging this kind of behavior where the most intense social relationships occur it facilitates the lack of skepticism and deters more open minded thinking.

They are christian, Muslim or the other religions depending where they were born simply because they were indoctrinated by their parents as very young children. They will go on to indoctrinate their own children and those will go on to indoctrinate their grandchildren!

Atheists have the intellect to see through the conditioning and escape into the real world!

Agnostics have the intellect to see through the conditioning but lack the courage to throw of the conditioning entirely.

Sadly Christians, muslims and others are still held firmly prisoner by the self perpetuating brainwashing!

Absolutely true because all religion are man made to control over the society with a certain set of rules and most of the religion does not evolve with the progress of society(accept Buddhism and Hinduism).

Religion is like a "Pot" and society is like a "Plant" inside. As the Plant grow in the form of a tree the pot needs to be re arranged otherwise pot will be broken or vanish inside the "Tree".

    So you are 100% true.

"Spirituality which is also inherent in all religions, is the real thing."

How is that not a dogma? You have said that it is not for you to provide evidence. If so, what are you relying on? A fixed unsubstantiated belief that god exists. In other words, a dogma.

Completely Agree With You! You state it excellently!

The goal of all life to to realize God, to realize the divinity that lies within us i.e. to realize our soul. Religion is just a tool to help us along this path of spiritual development. It is however not essential that one be religious or follow an organized religion to realize the God within.

It was the great Indian Spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda who once said that "the highest aim of all disciplines, of all spiritual paths is the attainment of the knowledge of the soul (Atman). If through the service of others, through unselfish actions, through the love of God, through meditation, or by numerous other ways your heart gets purified, so that you attain the vision of the Self, then what else needs to be attained?"

    Ummmm, you're WRONG.

The true purpose of religion is CONTROL. Control of governments, control of people, control of thought.

They (those in power in any "faith") use "religious dogma" and "belief systems" in order to control the weak and punish those who break their rules.

There is no such thing as "god". This is a made-up construct that ALL religions use, a "prophet", or a being that gives the religion it's rules/tenets/philosophical edicts.

God doesn't exist, only the power behind the control system exists.

"Spirituality" is something people hide behind when they pretend to have faith in the current religion, when they want to blend in but don't really believe the hype. "I'm not a XXXX, but I'm spiritual". You hear it said all the time. It simply means that person doesn't really believe in the religion, but they're not bold enough (or stupid enough) to fight the status quo.

This comes from the Middle Ages when you could be tortured to death simply for saying you didn't believe in god.

Now, religion isn't all that powerful (you can't be killed for heresy in most places anymore) but the people who call themselves "spiritual" are usually the fanatics, the fundamentalists who tolerate no one but themselves.

I personally don't see why they don't simply collect all copies of all religious texts, and burn them en masse, ban all religion, and kill anyone who fights it.

Religion is BAD. It shouldn't be allowed.

First of all, structured religions are just paths of righteousness and should be treated no more than this.

If turning to God is a thoughtful decision (as against impulsive) arising out of an urge, then limitations of structured religions should not be binding and person should not turn away from God due to dissatisfaction of structured religions.

God regulates how He is worshiped. God will not accept just anything we throw up to Him as worship. The order of God demands an order of worship and that is known as religion.

God commands that those who are saints come together to worship Him each and every Sunday and do the following, pray, sing (without instrumental music), partake of the Lord's Supper, give and hear the Word of God, all under the direction of elders who fit the description of the office in 1, 2 Timothy and Titus.
