Before I pronounce this laptop DEAD...?

...I'd like a second opinion (or two).

HP Pavilion ZV5000, circa 2004.

No boot. Backlit power button and other indicators on the base illuminate when I hit the power button. The fan runs for about a second (self test?) then shuts down. I can hear the disk spinning, and can hear what sounds like a "recalibrate" cycle from the disk every 5 seconds or so.

No backlighting on the LCD, nothing on the display (LCD or external monitor). I can shut the laptop down by holding the power button for 10 seconds.

Reseated memory module, reseated HDD. (The HDD seems OK; I installed it in another computer and recovered files using an Ubuntu Live CD session.)

Battery pack in or out makes no difference; AC or battery makes no difference, external monitor makes no difference.

I'm certainly not going to invest any money in an eight-year-old laptop.

But have I forgotten anything easy?

(Absent a solution, "best answer" will go to the most clever eulogy.)

"He's dead, Jim!"

Update:

New information: I just discovered that the router in the same office is dead, too. I'm surely dealing with power line surge damage in both devices. (We've had plenty of thunderstorms recently.)

I suppose I should test the FAX and printer, now.

    Dear Joe,

Admin and Allen have good answers. Surtenly 'He's dead, Jim!'

First I would try the BIOS battery, than another power supply and when possible the battery.

Did you checked the power supply itself?

You could mesher the voltage, but not the amp's. So you need a different charger for testing.

Do you know anyone with the same charger, when not look on the net wich notebook/laptop do and try to lokate one nearby.

And no matter what, I checked the whole system for bad connection, so everything goes out and back a gain, this time double checked.

It could be wise to use a live cd/dvd, this in case there is no OS on the HDD.

Did the problem accure now or not, isn't told ad your question.

You could try the net for old same notebook/laptops ad the resycle shop, you might get lucky and have one for a fiew bucks and some spare.

You like and want to fix it, I guess it's one of yourself.

When to old for anything, get a picture of it for keeps and through it away. (Just guessing)

When you like, you could take a look here:

    https://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=HP+Pavilion+Z...

Try different search engines and different phrases, it will result mostly to different links to go for.

And you could check the FAQ's of HP and the notebook/laptop forums for answers.

Hopefully I let you know enough and that you will find the answers you seek! (soon)

Good luck and have lots of fun!

Spilling liquid over a keyboard generally potential the top of your laptop as a results of fact comfortable areas interior that would desire to be stored dry have been without word made damp or perhaps moist. How do you recognize the motherboard did no longer get moist in case you have no longer disassembled the laptop

Remove the HDD and try to boot from the Ubuntu Live CD.

If the computer works OK in that way it tells you that it is just the hdd that is faulty.

If not the motherboard is dead.
