Dell laptop trouble, please help?

I'm asking on behalf of a friend of mine that I work with.

He says he has a 5 year old DELL Laptop, and whenever he plugs his phone, camera or his wife's Ipad into the USB ports, it can't recognize what's plugged in. he's explained to me that his phone will charge, but he can't connect it to put music onto it. He also claims that it has told him that the USB ports are in use when they are not..

He's told me that he already tried downloading new drivers because it tells him he needs 2.0(?) or higher..

His windows installer also says it isn't working properly..

so any clues what might be wrong with his laptop?

    My name is Krishna and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. This appears to be an issue with the Chipset drivers. Based on your system model and operating system, you should find it in www.support.dell.com

    I would start by reinstalling the motherboard drivers. These may be corrupt.
