is there any adapter i can get to connect my laptop to my tv?
I just have a basic tv with a scart and audio connections on the back

No. SVGA and scart are not compatible. In theory you could make up an adapter with a modulator in it to connect from your PC monitor socket to the scart socket on the TV, but I'm not aware that anyone sells them commercially. Next time you buy a TV you'll find it has assorted connectors to attach it to anything.

The easiest way is to use VGA or HDMI but it seems the telly is too old.

If your laptop/telly isn't hdmi ready try VGA to cart or VGA to VGA if your telly has said port.
