signalling on csx railroad?

a train on the hudson line approaches me / the signal, on the left side, showing towards me, changes from nothing to red - pretty much as train passes the signal / -- train passes me and eventually the signal changes from red to green and keeps that way for a couple of minutes and goes off then, showing nothing. I dont know what the engineer saw, but that a signal shows green opposite the direction the train goes I never experienced. any RR buffs who can solve that thing for me, please?

It was most likely an intermediate signal, not one controlled by a dispatcher.

It was red when there was an occupancy, the train you saw in the block of track on the other side of that signal.

The green after the train passed merely indicated there was no occupancy in the block of track between that signal and the next signal, in other words there was not a train following close behind the one that just went by you.

The signal went off because there was no train in the vicinity, most signals havbe a power saving feature that turns them off.

The engineer undoubtedly had a proceed signal, either clear (green) or some sort of approach depending on what was in the next block.
