Why do many Jews in Israel ... ?
gnash their teeth, and beat their heads and fists on the wailing wall ?

Before the state of Israel was established, the western wall of what remains of the temple was called the wailing wall because people would cry out in their prayers for the restoration of the Jewish homeland. After Israel established its independence in 1948, the Jordanians occupied that area, and refused to allow Jews to pray there. In 1967, during the six-day-way, Israel recaptured the area from the Jordanians. By then there was no need for 'wailing' because the homeland had been restored. It is now called the "Western Wall', not the 'wailing wall.' The Hebrew term is the 'Kotel'.
I've frequently pressed my forehead against the stones while meditation, but I've never heard of anyone banding their heads on the wall.
