I believe that the most truly 'spiritual' people are tolerant and compassionate but not necessarily religious. In fact almost all of the religious people I know are sadly intolerant and lack real compassion. Sad, but true.
There are some wonderful, tolerant and compassionate atheists as well. (Not too many on this site, though.... but the same can be said of the religious....... lol)

No. A recent study showed atheists are actually more compassionate than religious people. They're also more tolerant as can be plainly seen--they're supportive of LGBT rights, women's rights, religious freedom (the real kind, not the kind where one religious group dictates what everyone else does), etc. Secular nations have higher qualities of life as evidenced by lower rates of social ills like STDs, teen pregnancy, infant mortality, divorce, violent crime, etc.

Compassion and tolerance may be a tenet of most religions, but it doesn't shine through in the words or actions of many religious people.

Yes, compassion and tolerance are the main tenets of most religions. Unfortunately most believers either don't follow the tenets of their faith, or think these tenets don't apply to them.
Atheists practice tolerance by not foisting their beliefs onto others. If only the so called religious were that tolerant.

Tolerance and compassion are not the domain of the religious, or even the spiritual. Religion is just the practice of faith. One can be religious, going through the motions, but not even the slightest bit spiritual and the same is true in reverse.

Not in my experience. The religious tend to be dogmatic and far from tolerant and compassionate.

Tolerant of what?
Compassionate on whom?

NO, Truth has center stage on any worthy religion.
"It seems certain, that either a man must believe that virtue will make him happy, and resolve therefore to be virtuous, or think that he may be happy without virtue, and therefore cast off all care but for his present interest. It seems impossible that conviction should be on one side, and practice on the other; and that he who has seen the right way should voluntarily shut his eyes, that he may quit it with more tranquility. Yet all these absurdities are every hour to be found..."

Sure - just look to those tolerant, compassionate Christians down there at the Westboro Baptist Church.

things taught with books are lost.WHILE
things learned by experience ,self realization are forever.
so,just read your books to learn how to be compassionate and tolerant or listen to a preacher.non religious people learn by themselves ,they don't need a book.
A book is not written with help of reading another book.Think .
