How to prevent your rats from breeding?!?

I have 2 rats, which at first I thought were 2 females till one of them overnight grew balls! LoL

They are about 3 months old and I have separated them for now because I don't want them to breed, but ... they now are both lonely and sad looking! How can I keep them together and not have them breed? I'm scared to even let them play together outside of the cage!

hahaha I need like Rat birth control!!

Anyone got any ideas? or what do you guys do?

The only way to keep them together in the same cage is if you neuter the male, which costs around 100 dollars for surgery, pain pills etc.

If you have no desire to pay for surgery you will have to keep them seperated, you can keep their cages right by eachother so they can see eachother yet the male can't get to the female.

The only rat birth control that exsists is spay and neutering haha

    EDIT

Of course you always have the option of buying another male and female to keep your rats in same sex pairs. They are social and this would make them happier but being side by side they will still be sociably connected so either way they should be fine.

As for the person who said you cannot neuter a male rat this is completely false, all small animal vets know how and can neuter a male rat.

As suggested, you can look into neutrering the male. Otherwise, they must never come in contact. Mating can happen in the blink of an eye, they should never play together, and their cages shouldn't stand too close together (they can mate through the bars!)

Because rats are social, it isn't very fair for them to have to live alone. Both should have a same sexed companion. Perhaps you wouldn't mind owning four rats? Or rehoming one, and getting another of the opposite sex.

You should check out how to sex rats. They don't need testes for you to tell, you can pick them apart from when they are born, you just have to know what to look for.

i understand from having rats and breeding gerbils i could think of back on breeding them adult males are known to kill their very very own toddlers and could breed with the mummy at once after the toddlers are born. (this is a conventional deal) you will additionally choose afew cages approximately 4 to to make it basic to pass them. The minimum length of cage for a pair of rats is 80cm x 50cm x 37.5cm this could be ok for onefemalel and her offspring 2 are mandatory for the female one for the grownup male and one to place the adult males in until eventually you sell them. this is because of the fact their are no longer any policies whilst it includes interbreeding. so some distance as expenses pass you may get them 2nd hand for any value so i skinny from approximately $20-$ninety a cage yet once you get aroutinee it is going to quickly pay for itself. you may get a shopper waiting regardless of the undeniable fact that to purchase them for a resonable value utotherwiseou will lose funds ie nutrition bedding etc etc. i desire this facilitates :)

You cannot castrate the male. With females, it should be relatively simple to introduce a new one. Males are generally harder. With both you'd needer a younger rat who is less boisterous but will not be too hurt in fights. After getting them, you should isolate them from the rats for about 5wks, before placing them in. Unfortunately, after 2wks hen they sniff each other etc; through the cages, or are placed in a neutral ground to meet before going back to their cage, all four cages (the two males, two females) must be sold, and two cages must be bought. If you use the same cage as you have now, then one will feel more 'alpha' and territorial.

you can either have one or both spayed, or get them a same sex cagemate each to live with.

you should be wary of letting them out together. rats mating takes a matter of seconds.

either get the female spayed or get the male castrated, a lot of vets will do it but it costs, in UK in my vet its £40-£45 to castrate a male if you don't want to do that get another female to go with the other female :)
