Where did the Hellcat's name come from?

In WWII the tank destroyer M18 and the Fighter Grumman F6F were both named "Hellcat". Why is that? I didn't find a reference to the origin of the name. Does anybody know? Have there been any prior uses for that name? Is it a reference to something?
