Are you surprised at the lack knowledge and understanding of the science concerning the Sinking of the Titanic?
There are frequent Questions on Yahoo Answers regarding the Titanic. I find it most incredible that there are so many participants that have so little knowledge of the History of the Titanic and even more so the basic dearth of any concept of just what it means to having sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic at more than 13,000 feet. One person believed the Titanic is "over 200 years old". Another suggested "we build a Plastic box over it" I'm guessing like the National Aquarium. Even more startling is the suggestion by the man who found her in 1985, that he as applied for permission to "paint" her to keep her from further deterioration. He even suggest "to many tourist" are damaging her. Ignoring the fact that there are only 7 deep submersibles in the world.
There have been questions about "building a Titanic II", making an exact duplicate. One person thinks it would only cost a "million dollars".
Has our educational system failed to such an extent that even Robert Ballard thinks we can paint a ship at a depth of 13,000+ feet.
Are you surprised or like me just shocked?
Edit / details.
1. I'm not trying to ridicule any one.
2. As an expert it application of coatings and an engineer I can tell you that it is not possible to apply coatings at 13,000 feet deep. I didn't say you can't apply certain coatings under water.
3. Enclosing the Titanic in a plastic Box, disregarding the cost is simply not feasible.
4.The human remains photo, was released by NOAA, taken by the last Ballard lead expedition in 2004. See:http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2004/s2248.htm
5. The technical side of Ballard's Proposed painting is exactly the point. He should know better, yet at age 70 he thinks it would be a "piece of cake?". Nothing at that depth is a piece of cake.

SHOCKED!
I am in complete agreement with the failure of our Nations public education system, and I have known of it for some time. That says a lot, as I was a public school administrator and now embarrased to admit it. I retired early because I simply could not stand to have my hands tied behind my back and have to be a witness to it.
Elementary and Middle public schools have gone from two librarians and two PE coaches in every school, to 1 each for every 5 schools. History books have been replaced with "Social Study" books. To read a current Elementary "Social Studies" book. Geography has been eliminated.
I challenge you to find any kid under the age of 14 that can find the United States on a globe. Most in fact won't know what a globe is.
If any caring parents knew what was going on (and more importantly NOT going on) in Public Schools today, they would all be home schooling their kids or sending them else where.
But, as bad as it is, it's not only the "educational" system, it's the govenment slowly taking control over the lives of future Americans - from birth to death, and our public schools are the paving the road to the socialism of America. Comgine Obama Care with taxing the wealthy, and add to that what's already happened in public schools, and we are almost there already.
At the start of the Obama Administration, public schools went from free lunches to those that can't afford it - to free lunches for everyone, because we can't embarass the kids whose parents can't afford to buy their lunch.
Course now, it is no longer a "free lunch" program, it is a "free meals" program, as some genius concluded that breakfast is the most important meal of the day - then we have to give the kids a free breakfast every morning. (By the way, teachers are posted at the vending machines 30 minutes before student lunches begin, so no one can purchase anything from the vending machines to go with their lunch. Why? Cause not all kids can afford it.
This year I was told, the district went with mandatory "school uniforms". Since it was obvious some kids have really nice clothes, and some kids don't - so they are going to make 'em all wear the same thing. Those that can't afford it of course, will get free ones.
But I have ranted enough. . . I could tell you some stories that would make you want to march on Washington tomorrow.

No, I am not surprised that these spoon fed ignorants from our [ub;ic school system leaves all kids behind. They can't spell, they can't do simple additions without a calculator and when they are done, and finished their assignments, worst gets rewarded so as not to hurt his self esteem
What else, our kids are being made into ignorant useful idiots for political brain washing. The American student ranks about 40th in school learning proficiency of all the countries of the world shows students here have the highest self-esteem.
I'm sursurprised they would even know what an ocean liner was. They are being taught this is not even worth knowing.
So why shouldn't we respect a total lack of factual details of Titanic from our populace of youth:
**the story from the movies is their history.
Three things I learned today about Titantic
It wasn't chrisened before its maiden disastrous journey
It was finished April 2, 1912 less than two weeks before sailing its maiden and final voyage.
They released a photo showing human remains at the ocean floor--killed exactly 100 years ago..
These first two show there wasn't adequte preparation for the ship to be proven reliable
There was haughtiness and risk taking and the captian, was actually was retired. It was unsinkable!
From the movies comes forrth the historical facts.
It is a bit ironic that the Titanic's mangement had the lack of knowledge and carelessness as similar to typical student today.
Both point to failure.

I think a little more research couldn't kill you, either. As you write, Titanic is being damage by ""to many tourist"". IFREMER and a Russian organization rent out their subs to anyone with enough money. A couple even got married on the bow. A company is offering tours to the wreck. Wouldn't you call them tourists? http://www.luxuryandmoretravel.com/2010/12/titanic... Ballard has no intentions of "painting" the ship, in the conventional sense. He has suggested coating the wreck with anti-fouling paint, which would preserve the wreck in its current state.

Right before you make an attempt at ridiculing other people sort your own ignorance out first!
It is possible to paint the wreck!
It's been done and being done on oil rig legs and pipe work under water to prevent corrosion1
Depth has little to do with it!
How did you think it's done?
Your dad holding his breath free diving with a paint roller?
And even the so called plastic box idea is perfectly plausible expensive but plausible!
And who released a photo of human remains that do not excised near or around the wreck of the Titanic?
There are artifacts like china plates but no human remains have been found near this wreck!

As a product of Louisiana public schools, I am amused but not amazed by any lack of knowlege demonstrated by any segment of the general public.
Ok, I am a bit surprised at the suggestions made by the man who found her, even to the point of being a bit skeptical, although I will take your word for it rather than researching it for myself.
Are you sure there's no kind of paint that can be applied at that depth, and that some secret society of wealthy submariners isn't holding regular poker games on her?
I'm reminded of a quote, from Jed Clampett (I'll paraphrase -- it's too much trouble to research the actual quote): "I've heard of U.S. dollars, I've heard of confederate dollars, but this here fella wants to pay us in something called 'million dollars'".

Well... that's what makes dumb people.... they'll look right at you and ask you if you were in the Revolutionary War.... they have no idea of time - no idea of history or precedent or anything. It's pretty amazing. It's republican voters.
You often find this with battered children - they just don't have any energy left to put history together in their heads. It's all been knocked out of them.

I am surprised. I'm also surprised that people neglect the fact that greed and incompetence sank the Titanic. It's shocking.

Not really. There will always be ignorant people out there. That's just the way it is.
