Why does the Pekingese dogs at dog shows have extremely long hair?
I have a pekingese, and I know they originated in china where they were supposed to resemble the mythical lion-like guardian animal. But at dog shows all the pekingese i've seen just look like lumps of hair, can't even distinguish their legs or tails. I personally think they look so much better with shorter hair, they even do look a bit like lions if u don't let the hair grow too long. ...So what's the purpose of letting their hair grow so long?

It the breed standard. Read it sometime. And I quote "A long and profuse coat is desirable providing it does not obscure the shape of the body. Long feathering is found on toes, backs of the thighs and forelegs, with longer fringing on the ears and tail."

Because that is the standard for this breed to be shown in it's natural look.
Which is longer hair.
It takes the owner/handler hours to maintain that look for the dog.
