If all else fails, can I just leave a smoke alarm on the floor?
I know it's not ideal, but for various convoluted reasons I can't fit a smoke alarm on the ceiling of my flat. Will it still be effective if I leave one on the floor?

Just to add, smoke in a room follows a "mushroom" pattern. It will rise to the ceiling above the source of heat, fill the ceiling as the air is warmer up there, then start to fall as it hits the cooler walls, enveloping you.
It really should be as high as posible, even on the top of a wall would be better, than no where.

No..the very nature of a fire means that the hot gases and toxic fumes rise to the ceiling..presenting 'cleaner' air at floor level.
A smoke alarm is and indicator of the presence of smoke and therefore functions best where the smoke will reach it..ie at height.
smoke alarms should be fitted horizontally on the ceiling for best protection..but failing that vertically on a wall would be better than on the floor.
Bang a picture hook up and hang it there...

you don't mention if this is a hard wired or battery operated one. Secondly if it wont fit on your ceiling, which i cant picture why it would not fit there, put it on any wall withing 10 inches of the ceiling line and this should be fine. If its hard wired, then do this directly above an outlet and have an electrician run a feeder from your outlet to where the smoke detector should be. i am an electrical contractor with over 25 years experience

>I in simple terms think of they might have at hire given me a warning or some thing. Yeah, they used to do stuff like that yet a $1000 high-quality extremely seems to get human beings's interest. you're endangering the completed development by ability of disabling your alarm if a fireplace starts on your apt. by ability of the time my smoke alarm detects it i'd be trapped in flames... the tip. >Do you think of there is any way i will get out of paying the high-quality? no longer alongside with your suggestions-set in case you suggested some thing dumb like "shouldn't those human beings have there very own hearth detectors working if there aggravating approximately their lives?" i'd throw the e book at you smack my gavel and say next! you're no longer getting it, it is not important in the adventure that your protection gadget is inconvenient in case you intrude with its operation you're breaking an fairly extreme regulation that actively endangers the regular public. > additionally i became thinking if the home complicated have been given money if the hearth marshal fined me? a fireplace Marshall is the enforcement branch of the hearth Dept. he works for the city they might arrest you and levy fines as they see fit interior interior reach statutes. This has no longer something to do with the apt. development they're required by ability of regulation to document any willful infractions they see the state gets each and every penny of the high-quality. What the apt. gets is the main suitable to maintain their use and occupancy enable (which you endangered). i will inform you desirable now each and every excuse you have given would basically serve to enrage a choose you simpler act such as you broke the regulation and overlook approximately lame excuses or you would be out $1000.

i'm sure it would work fine. those things are so sensitive that it will go off giving you plenty of time to get out. so many houses that are older don't have any smoke alarms so putting yours on the floor is still better than nothing. why dont you test it and see by making some smoke in your kitchen and see how long it takes to respond.

nope..smoke rises to the top so by the time the smoke alarm goes off, it may be to late

No. Smoke is less dense than air so it rises, by the time it gets to the floor you'll be unconscious or dead.
