Why is my fridge leaking?

Our fridge has had a leak now since about 3 days. Its a whirlpool side by side. I tried to change the filter and I took it out not having a new one( I didn't know where the filter was and what kind I needed). So anyways, I have no idea what's wrong within. I have put the old filter back in, hoping it would stop the leaking. That didn't work. Then I shut the water off and that stops it.
I have also soaked up the tray that's in the bottom, where the melted ice goes according to the manual. Can someone tell me what's wrong with it or how I can fix it? We've only had it for 6 months so it's basically brand new

Was the leak there before you tried to change the filter?  If not, then when you reinstalled the old filter, you probably did not seat it properly.  It's also possible that you damaged an O-ring during the removal and reinstallation.

At only 6 months, is your refrigerator not still under warranty?  Let the service company sort it out for you.
