how can I free up space on my laptop?

Move all documents to D drive, with the following methods D becomes the default drive for documents including music etc.

EDIT.

After you move them to D, delete from C and don't forget to empty the recycle bin.

12/ The documents folder, along with all of its files, will now be moved to the new location.

First of all, let's set something straight here. Your C, D, etc drives are not memory, they are storage space on your hard drive. Your RAM is memory, and its used only by your system and running programs to temporarily store operating data that gets dumped (deleted) when you shut down the laptop.

As far as freeing up space, move all your personal files (pictures, music, video and movies, documents) to your data D drive, that's what that partition is for.

Or move them to an external storage media such as a USB hard drive or thumb drive.

Or even burn them to DVD or CD, or just delete all files that you don't need anymore.

Also do a C drive clean up, check for errors and defragment. Delete your cookies, temporary files and temporary internet files at least once every two weeks. Properly uninstall programs and features that you don't use or need. Use CCleaner to delete your registry keys that are no longer needed (be careful how and what you delete with CCleaner, as you can easily cripple and even corrupt your system beyond repair).
