The state of being naive—having or showing a lack of experience, understanding or sophistication.
One who is naive may be called a naif.
Perhaps better said, a naif is naive.

The two words are not just alternative spellings, but it is very difficult to distinguish their meanings, because they are often used in the same context.
Naif is sometimes used as a term to describe art, and it is also used as a noun, which naive is usually not.
Naive is the main word used to mean ingenuous or simple, whereas naif is not.
