Relationship between college major/cigarette smoking?
It seems that smoking rates are higher amongst humanities students – English, Sociology, History, etc; and very low in the "practical" majors – Nursing, Engineering, Business.
Has anyone else noticed this? Have you noticed one specific major that seems to have the most smokers?
Nocturnal – you're right, it seems like almost every Art major I know smokes.

You ask, "Has anyone else noticed this?" You bet. It's a common stereotype, and this article suggests some of the reasons: http://yaleherald.com/arts/burning-with-a-passion-...
1. it's romantic
2. it teaches charity (sharing of cigarettes among users)
3. it creates a sense of community (camaraderie among smokers)
4. it makes one look cool and hip, or feel like an outsider (beatnik culture, modern hipsters, etc.)
5. embracing one's mortality and rejecting our culture's health fetishism
6. aesthetics: of the curling, rising smoke, or of the stylized wielding of a cigarette
It's not a comprehensive list of all reasons people smoke; the article focuses on college students. The patterns and stereotypes are likely to vary in other cultures.
Now, how would one match the attributes on the list to various college subjects? I'll take a stab at it. Philosophy: #5. Art school: #4 & #6. Literature: #1 & #5. Musicians: all six reasons on the list -- http://www.jasonjhall.com/huh/armand/images/Armand...

I'm not really sure if it has anything to do with specific majors, I think majority of people do start smoking after high school/college age though.

just pure curiosity
or
many other influences

I would say Theatre and Art, but I can't vouch for the others
