Xmas Poll! Decorations: what is too early/too late?

How early is too early to put up Xmas decorations? What is the earliest you've put them up?

Also how late is too late to take them down? Is there a point where you've waited too long and you just decide not to bother putting them up at all?

It's always so tempting to leave the lights up... everything else comes down but what does everyone think?

After Thanksgiving until Feb. 2nd (Candlemas) is the longest.

I usually start putting bigger things out after Turkey Day... lights, pictures, decorations, etc.

However, I usually leave a few little things out all year long. I have a little Coca-Cola piece on a counter, and a couple pictures mixed in with others on a bookshelf.

As for outside lights -- I believe you can put them up around Halloween or so, and you can turn them on to TEST them... but I don't turn mine on until Thanksgiving night. Then they are on every evening through the new year.

I have big C7 bulbs alternating red-white-red-white that line my house. I turned them on Valentine's night, and they were noticed by several drivers. So, that might be a reason to keep red or red-white lights up for longer!

I think "normal" is up in early December and down in early January.

I think anything before US Thanksgiving is too early. We've never put them up earlier than that.

I always think that taking them down after school Christmas holidays is a little too late. But I think taking them down is a little different. I always leave our outside Christmas lights on until the 1st of February (they look nice in the snow). We also have lights going up the stairs that we leave up quite late (nice to see when you're up in the middle of the night). I think the tree should come down earlier than that, but some things like lights I think are okay to leave up later.

Put the lights on after Thanksgiving/first week of December. Take them down at the latest right after new years.

I think putting them up before Thanksgiving and leaving them up beyond New Years day is pushing it.

I prefer to wait until the weekend after Thanksgiving. Enjoy Thanksgiving to the fullest, then Christmas. I always wait until the day after New Year's to take them down. It adds to festiveness of the New Year's holiday and any parties you might have.
