Why do most Christians not follow the Old Testament?

In John 18:20 Jesus replied. “I have spoken openly to the world,” “I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. (John 18:20)

In Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus stated: “17 Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the [way of] the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18For, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished (Matthew 5:17-18,)

Jesus(Peace be upon him) was also reported in the Gospel according to Matthew 19:16-17, to have made obedience to the divine laws the key to paradise: “16 Now behold, one came and said to him,“Good teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” 17So he said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”(Matthew 19:16-17)

However, Paul, who claimed to be a disciple of Jesus, systematically cancelled the laws. In his letter to the Romans, chapter 7:6, he stated, “But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.” (Romans 7:6)

Also in Matthew 5:19, Jesus Christ(Peace be upon him) was reported to have insisted on strict obedience to the commandments saying, “Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19)

This was the religion conveyed in the message of Jesus(Peace be upon him); submission to the will of the one true God by obedience to His commandments. Jesus(Peace be upon him) stressed to his followers that his mission did not cancel the laws received by Prophet Moses(Peace be upon him). As the prophets who came after Moses maintained the law, so did Jesus. Chapter al-Maa’idah, verse 46 of the Qur’aan indicates that Jesus(Peace be upon him) confirmed the Laws of the Torah in his message. “And in their footsteps, I sent Jesus, son of Mary, confirming the Torah that had come before him, and I gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirmation of the Torah that had come before it,” (Quraan Maa’idah verse 46)

Qur‘aan: “Surely, have sent to every nation a messenger (saying): ‘Worship Allaah and avoid false gods.”

In Luke 4:8, the Devil asks Jesus(Peace be upon him) to worship him, promising him the authority and glory of all of the kingdoms of this world, “And Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’ ”(Luke 4:8)

Thus, the essence of the message of Jesus(Peace be upon him) was that only God deserves to be worshipped and that the worship of anyone or anything besides God or along with God is false. Jesus not only called people to this message but he also practically demonstrated it for them by bowing down in prayer and worshipping God himself. In Mark 14:32, it states: “And they went to a place which was called Gethsemane; and he [Jesus] said to his disciples, ‘Sit here, while I pray.’ And in Luke 5:16, “But he withdrew to the wilderness and prayed.”

Jesus(Peace be upon him) called them to worship the one true God who is unique in His qualities. God does not have the attributes of His creation, nor does any creature share any of His attributes. In Matthew 19:16-17, when the man called Prophet Jesus(Peace be upon him) ‘good’, saying, “Good teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” Prophet Jesus replied, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.” He denied the attribution of ‘infinite goodness’ or ‘perfect goodness’ to himself, and affirmed that this attribute belongs to Allaah alone.

The vast majority of Christians today pray to Jesus, claiming that he is God. Jesus’ message, which urged mankind to worship one God alone, became distorted after his departure. Later followers, beginning with Paul, turned that pure and simple message into a complicated trinitarian philosophy which justified the worship of Jesus, and then the worship of Jesus’ mother, Mary the angels and the saints. Catholics have a long list of saints to whom they turn in times of need.

Jesus depends on God for Authority: God depends on no one

"The words that I say to you I do not speak of my own authority." (John 14:10 RSV)

The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus. (Acts 3:13)

For truly in this city there were gathered together against thy holy servant Jesus. . . (Acts 4:27)

Everyone, except for God, are God's servants. Jesus, too, is God's servant.

    The key to understanding this issue is knowing that the Old Testament law was given to the nation of Israel, not to Christians. Some of the laws were to reveal to the Israelites how to obey and please God (the Ten Commandments, for example). Some of the laws were to show the Israelites how to worship God and atone for sin (the sacrificial system). Some of the laws were intended to make the Israelites distinct from other nations (the food and clothing rules). None of the Old Testament law is binding on us today. When Jesus died on the cross, He put an end to the Old Testament law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:23-25; Ephesians 2:15).

    In place of the Old Testament law, we are under the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2), which is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…and to love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). If we obey those two commands, we will be fulfilling all that Christ requires of us: “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:40). Now, this does not mean the Old Testament law is irrelevant today. Many of the commands in the Old Testament law fall into the categories of “loving God” and “loving your neighbor.” The Old Testament law can be a good guidepost for knowing how to love God and knowing what goes into loving your neighbor. At the same time, to say that the Old Testament law applies to Christians today is incorrect. The Old Testament law is a unit (James 2:10). Either all of it applies, or none of it applies. If Christ fulfilled some of it, such as the sacrificial system, He fulfilled all of it.

    “This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3). The Ten Commandments were essentially a summary of the entire Old Testament law. Nine of the Ten Commandments are clearly repeated in the New Testament (all except the command to observe the Sabbath day). Obviously, if we are loving God, we will not be worshipping false gods or bowing down before idols. If we are loving our neighbors, we will not be murdering them, lying to them, committing adultery against them, or coveting what belongs to them. The purpose of the Old Testament law is to convict people of our inability to keep the law and point us to our need for Jesus Christ as Savior (Romans 7:7-9; Galatians 3:24). The Old Testament law was never intended by God to be the universal law for all people for all of time. We are to love God and love our neighbors. If we obey those two commands faithfully, we will be upholding all that God requires of us.

    Nice BOOK? What is your exact Question? Other than We Christians not following the Old testament? Each Denomination of Christianity has it's own set of MAN Made Rules. This is why I go to a Non- Denominational Church. We use the True word of GOD. Most of the others? Are in a World of their own? And come Judgment day? They will find this out.

    I do know that when Jesus Came. He abolished most of Mosaic Laws, But the Ten Commandments.Through His death on the Cross. He abolished Sin offerings. For all who except His work on the Cross and ask Him into their lives.

    The Old Testament is based on Jewish Scripture which Saul of Tarsus is believed to have been quite the expert on

    From his perspective, according to Jewish Scripture the coming of the Messiah, which is what he believed Jesus was after his incident on the road to Damascus, would herald the end of the Old Laws

    Hence why the newly named Paul was happy to go out teaching Gentiles the good news. He wasn't concerned about Jews sharing food with Gentiles for instance because to him the Old Laws were simply no longer relevant because the Messiah had come

    Those who created the Bible though still included those older Jewish teachings in them because the original Christians themselves were once Jews and were trying to encourage other Jews that it was time for change

    And it was easier to create that bridge by having these older teachings still there than simply asking them to suddenly change overnight

    In contrast a Gentile would see no relevance to them as they'd never followed Jewish Law in the first place

    Presumably since most Christians have descended from Gentile ancestry that argument still holds true

    Your understanding is coloured by your own religion.

    In Judaism there is a distinction between the commandments,

    & all the 613 laws about keeping kosher food rules.

    When Jesus was asked about the commandments,

    He condensed them into just 2 principles:

    "Love GOD & love your neighbour."

    On these two, hang all the laws & the prophets.

    Jesus was almost contemptuous of the man-made rules.

    We believe Jesus was both human & divine;

    human from Mary, but divine from GOD.

    Christians do not pray to Jesus, we pray to the Father.

    We pray in the name of Jesus, the Son, as he taught us.

    The Father & Son are different persons.

    But they are also one in the godhead.

    GOD is Spirit, but He entered Creation.

    That also makes him Father & Son,

    since GOD is indivisible; a Trinity.

    Peter & Paul were very clear about this teaching.

    They ruled that Christians not drink blood or eat

    food offered to Pagan idols. All else is clean.

    The principals of the Hebrew scriptures remain relevant to true Christians but some of the laws Christians are no longer under such as the Mosaic Law.

    Why do most Christians not follow the Old Testament?

    The old testament was also a covenant (contract) and as such was legally binding only upon those of Israel and those who, through a desire to enter into that covenant, through circumcision. Christians are not a legal party to that old covenant. A new covenant/testament was foretold by the prophet Jeremiah, quoting God Himself in chapter 31 that the new would not be like the old one, made with the children of Israel.

    Your citation of Mt.5:17-18 ignores the immediate context, and the context of the chapter. Jesus refers to the law and prophets, and there are no laws codified in the prophets with the potential to be fulfilled or destroyed. The ONLY thing located within the law and prophets with this potential are prophesies. If this were indeed about the legalities of the law, Jesus could not have proceeded to alter points of that law later in the same chapter way beyond jots and tittles.

    Your citation of Mt. chapter 19 also ignores the context of the chapter. The man asked what he, personally, could do in order to inherit eternal life. The lesson of the chapter is that no one can, based on their own ability, accomplish this, as none could keep that law perfectly, as was required. Only by what God does is man able to be saved (v26).

    Your citation of Mt. 5:19 again ignores the context regarding the word "these" commandments, and not "the" commandments, as if to imply old covenant points of law. Again, I point out that "these" commandments are where Jesus instructs His followers while altering and even negating points of old covenant law.

    In John chapter 5, Jesus broke (set aside; nullified) the sabbath command, and declared that it was not a sin to do good on the sabbath. What He did, He deliberately called "work" and informs us that the Father in Heaven works on sabbaths.

    In John 8, Jesus again negates the law by not agreeing with carrying out the stoning of a woman caught in the act of adultery.

    In Mt. 19, Jesus disagrees with Moses regarding the easy divorce allowed in the law, which He informs us was a concession on the part of Moses due to the hardness of their hearts.

    The message of the gospel, proclaimed by Christ in parables, and openly declared by His apostles, is a message of salvation, not by works of the law, but through faith, as attested to by the prophet Abraham.

    Surely, we need to also avoid self-appointed false prophets who preach a gospel of law, where faith is diluted and indeed negated as a result.

    The Old Testament is part of Salvation History no longer binding as Jesus gave us the New Covenant.

    Many of the laws are still in place but covered by a simple one from Him:

    Love God with your whole heart, mind and strength

    and love your neighbor as yourself.

    I fully agree.

    I'm greatly disturbed by the way the OT laws are ignored, especially this one:

    18If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:

    19Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

    20And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

    21And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

    Jesus took the Name of God (I Am) to Himself

    That makes him a liar, a lunatic or God.

    There are no other options.
